Richards met in the basement of Temperance Hall. Among those present were many rsons trom the Second, Fourth and Fifth Wards, with a few from other wards. Mr. A. R. Shepherd called the meeting to Order,and nominated Alderman J. F. Brown for ehairman, who was elected by acclamation. Mr. Brown, on taking the chair, said they had met for an important purpose—important in times of peace, but much more so now that & wicked rebellion is in our land. They had come not alone to select delegates to a conven- i tion and nominate candidates for offices, but strengthen the hands of the iovernment in its eilorts to put down the rebellion. It must not he said that they had no influence, every man wielded an influence, and he who fails toexert duat influence in fayor of his government is a traitor. They had met with a disposition to harmonize on the selection of good men who w id receive the support of all. They were 8il pledged against any schism in their ranks and they must abide the decision of the con- yention. If they were to split among them- selves, then will their enemies take advantage o They should work with unity. and would b ep to succeed. F. L. Harvey was chosen secretary. Brent, Esq., coun- sei for Dr. Harvey Lindsley, of Washington, issued & writ of habeas corpus directing Sam’i Chase Barney to produce his four children, who, it will be remembered, he took from their school here, notwithstanding the fact that the court here had decided that the guardianship was vested in Dr. Lindsley.
