The Chronicle alludes to the nervousness which is beginning to be exhibited by the so- calkd leading crgans of England on the rela- tions of their Governmént with ours, and thinks there is occasion for it, as, let the present strug- gle terminate as it may, there will always be found on this side of the water s people who will remember the insalts and outrages they have rectived from the British Government, and who will, when occasion preeents, avail | themselves of the last interpretation of inter- national inw made by the solicitor general of England, which permits him to assert that he has no power to forbid the building in British ports of yerseis designed for the Confedera:es- The Chronicle contrasts this course of Eug- land with th: of France towards us, the latter Government iiaving forbidden any public sub- scription to the Coniederaie Joan, i OUR MILITARY BUDGET — 1 A REBEL OFFICER IN LIMBO. On his errand to arrest Rey. Martin yes- terday, Capt. Johnson, of the War Department, found at the house of the former an individual Agaiust whom his suspicion rested, and on cross-qufrticning him, he proved to be a rebel | officer, by name Henry Williams, and heiding | the pesition of Captain of the Commissary De- partment in Richmond. He was brought to the city and sent to the Old Capitol. The ebjrct of his visit, it a,pears, was to meet with his lady-love, a daughter of the purson, and he regarded it asrather hard luck, | after he had traveled in the mud for three days and nights, to get caught so scon alter his ar- rival. It is stated that he acted as rebel mait earrier be!ween Martin and the Confederaws, REBEL SPIES ARRESTED. Siace the commencement of the war there lave been serious leaks mear head-quarters, the Rebels receiving early notice of important army orders, such information as would give | themearly warning of all our movements of troeps. Efforts to ferret out the traitors have beem unavailing, but no doubt existed of their being in a high position. Watch wasset over a number, Sud finally two clerks were gaught carrying Rebel muils, and arresied by Colonel Baker on Sunday last, James. L. Addison, Chief Clerkin the Adjutant General's office, War Department, and Anthony Addison, his brother, Cai:f Olerk in the Pension Burean. James L. Some Gv or 7u rebel cavalry made their ap- pearance yesterday in the vicinity of Difficult creek. They did not stay long, however. Norma.—By all odds tho best performance of the week by the Grau Company was thatof , Norma last night. Lorini made the best Norma in most respects that we have had since Grisi, though laboring under slight hoarseness. It is not universally | known, perhaps, among those who have seen | ber, that she is an American lady, formerly | Mise Virginia Whiting, of Boston. We trust - thatthe public interest in her wiil not be di- minished by a knowledge of the fact. Her + Casta Diva” last night was well nigh fault- | less. Morensi’s Adalgasia was also excellent, | and the duet Mira Oh Norma created great ap- plause. Susini’s Oroveso is acknowledged to be ube best rendition of the part ever given in this country. Maccaterri as Pallio was fair only, + not up to the average of the other leading paris. The orchestra under Muzio ar the chorus | ‘were very geod. The audience ras large and fashionable. To-night Halevy’s celebrated « pera La Juive is to be produced, with Lorins. sordier, Mac. eaferri, Susini and Barilli in the principal roles. On to-morrow night « Lucretia Borgia,” and on Saturday night « Robert le Diable.” Seats ard librettos may be obtained at Met- zerutts. REPORTS FROM VICKABURG. . [From the Jackson Appeal, 11th.} A gentleman from Grand Gulf yesterday, announces that heavy musketry was heard on Sunday morning for about two hours, in the vicinity of New Oarthage. We have been looking for news of this character for some days, and are now quite-anxious to know the result. If we mistake not, some of the gallant Missourians, under General Bowen, were in the fight. A Yankee crpcaiden, foraging and hunting negroes, visited Richmond, La., last week, and while there gobbled up everything within reach. We hear that they killed Phil. Sartori- ous, of Milliken’s Bend, while in Richmond. They carried off negroes from eyery plantation where they were to be found. ‘THE YANKEES ON THH MOVE. The Yankees who have been in camp on the peninsula for the last six or seven weeks, were on the move yesterday. Troops were movin; to and tro al field, with the exception of a few on the levee, was struck and carried away. Four large transports, loaded with troops, departed during the day, and others appeared to be preparing tostart. Those troops are, no doubt, destined to reinforce the Yazoo Pass expedition, where such strenuous efforts are to be made for our annihilation. ‘The garrulous Yankees have got up a new “rig” tor facilitating their circaumforaneantour in the direction at Vicksburg. The project, it is announced, abounds with the promise or fayorabls resuits. The levee below the Yazoo Pass is being cut ter the distance of a mile down the river with the hope of turning a body of water through that will completely inundate the whole Yazoo and Tallanatchie valleys. Wedonot think that they will suc- ceed in washing out Fort Pemberion by this new move, or check TiJghman, whom they re- port to be erecting a battery at the confluence of the little Taliahatchie with Coldwater. Like | all the others, this will, in the end, prove an abortive scheme, The Yankees sent down another “turreted monster” on Saturday night, with the hope of causing us to expend a vast quantity of ammu- nition in endeavoring to destroy the Quaker craft. But they were disappointed this time. Their risibles were not excited in the least, as | | nothing could be heard tg break the stillness of | the night, save the firing of the pickets to an- | | nounce that something resembling a boat was floating down. monster well, and finding it tobe a small house erected on the logs to resemble a gunboat, with two wooden chimacys, he gave the proper sig- nal, and it was permitted to passon unmoleted, MR#, A.
