Among the most noteworthy papers to which the anomalous condition of the times has. given birth, is the following letter from Hon. Mont- gomery Biair, himself a citizen of Maryland it will be remembered, to Mr. Richard Cham- bers, of the same Siate: Mr. Richard Chaz é Greenshorougn, t ‘aretine County, Ml Dear Sr—1 have yours of the 23d ins asking whether it would not be better for us LOt to Mieke the question of Emancipation in Our approaching election. If, as assume, it was in our power to make or to make the question, it might be profitable to debate with ourselves whether We weuld or would not make it, But, when in point of tact, it is not tor us to say whether the question shull or shail not be made, it #€: ms to Me to be idle to discuss the policy of waking it. The qnestion is upon us, and all that we can do is to say on which side we shall Tange ourselves. To be debating whether it is Letter or werse for us to have it, is like debat- ing whether the rain that is talling is needed. i know, indeed, that too many of our friends are so afraid of the slavery question, or rather are go terrified at the Secession howl of “Abko- litionists,” that they persuade themselves that they can dodge the issue and can even join in the howl, without helping the Secessionists ; but the war now drenching the land in blood, which is. due to this timidity, should at least teach us that to cower before traitors and adopt their slang is alike inconsistent with patriotism and self respect. No one can doubt that ifthe men of the South who dissented from Mr. Czthoun’s monstrous doctrines had stcod up boldly against them we should have extinguished them without yio- tence. But instead of making common cause against the uuilifier, they joined in his war-cry against the North, which ‘utterly drowned the feeble botes they attempted to utier for “the Union.” Such have been the disnstrous results of at- tempting to dodge the slavery question, wnich Mr. Calhoun, as we tind by his print=d letters, éince publi-ned, forced on thecountry ‘Force tbe issue,’ he wrote to Mr. Percy Walker, and accordingly it was foreed upon us. Let us meet it like men. Yours truly, M. Beatin. WASHINGTON. March 27th, 163. The Baltimore American, of Saturday last, made it the text of admirable and conyin- cing commentaries, which we irust may, with the letter, reach every Maryland reader. Secession has already virtually destroyed slavery in that State. Negroes there, which, tbree years ago, readily sold for $1,500, will not pow bring $15Uon the block. In fact, they are utterly unsaleable. Such is the result of seces- sion upon the pockets of the secessionists of Maryland; as that treason has ength there only where the value of the property of slave- holders has been destroyed as one ot the posi- uveand clearly forseen results of the exploita- tion of the so extensive and long maturing con- epiracy against the liberties of the whites of the land involved in this rebellion in the in. terest of the claes, only, who hold slave proper- ty, and the desperate band of broken down po- iitical hacks who sought by playing on the feurs of the South with referetice to slayery, to destroy the Union, that they might continue to control the public affairs in one section of it. Long before the first gun was fired at Fort Sumter, we urged updn Maryland that if war came cut of the attempt to secede, its first cer- taia result would be the utter destruction of ' slavery in the border States. How fast that prediction is being realized, the reader may Know from the facts concerning the moncy value of slaves in Maryland mentioned above. Industrislly, it always was a positive hin- drance to the general progress of Marylan: value being only the protits of negro breeding with the former steady increase of the value of negroes in the extreme South; profits accruing altugether to a class who certainly did no more for the State’s general prosperity than any other , elazs of Marylanders—if as much as most ethers. Though, numerically, that class was small, we struggled to ward off the anti-slavery result of eecession from them upon conserva- tive principles up tothe hour at which it be- came obvious to us that the great danger to th: complete and spvedy assurance of Marylaad to the Union existed only in the intrigues of | those who assumed to be the guardigns of the | rights and interests of slavery in that State. On rializing that they uad unconditionally elected union with the oligarchy of Jeffersen Davis, and were willing to risk the lives and fortunes of all others in the State in the vaia effort to tie Maryland hand and fect, and to cast her help- less into poor Virginia’s present condition, we rejoiced that the line between the nominal in- terests of slavery in the State and those of its people at large in the preservation of the Union at the point of the bayonet is being rapidly drawn in the minds of the Maryland public The issue was started by John C. Calhoun. His peculiar followers have pushed it to this hour, with the ayowal of the purpose of de- atroying the United States Government and erecting a slaveholding oligarchic despotism in its stead. From Spratt, down to Pryor, every one of the conspirators who have put themselves on the record syow the ultimate purpore of their rebellion to be the obliteration of the civil rights of the laboring white man. ‘The friends of the Union and civil liberty in Maryland and all the other Border States, now know precisely where and how to meet them. And what are to be the grand results of the contest? The suppression of the rebellion on the one hand, with the speedy end of slavery in the Border States. Qn the other hand, if the Union cause fails, civil liberty will instantly be extinct in all the Border States; to remain #0 until other generations may in the Provi- dence of God beat down the oligarchy by such Means as those with which the latter now seek to destroy civil liberty throughout the en- tire South. Late vgom Port Hypson.—Late news from New Orleans states that the Land Expedition, under General Banks’ orders, really made a serious attempt at Port Hudson, and were foiled,—by being drowred out. The steamers accompanying them were sucked in, by a crevasse cut by the rebels, and one of them, “the Morning Light,” was in immicent peril. ‘The objectof the Expedition seems to have ‘been, to get to the Northward of the rebel bat- terivs at Port Hudson, by marching around them, on the opposite ( west) side of the Mis- siseippis H Mus. General-in- Chief -—The following dispatch gre- ceived from General Gilman, gives the details of his attack upon the enemy in central Ken- CLEAR OP Somerset, Ky., March 31.—I attacked the enemy yesterday in @ strong post of his own selection, defended by six cannon, near this town; fought him for five hours, driving him from one position to another, and finally stormed his position, whipped hin handsomely, and drove him in contusion towards the river. His loss 1s over 300 in killed, wounded and prison- ers. The enemy outnumbered us two to one, and were commanded by Pegram in person. Night stopped pursuit, which will be resumed in the morning. We captured two stands of colors. Our loss in killed, wounded and miss- ing, will not exceed thirty. Scott's famous rebel regiment was cut off from the rest and scattered. (Signed,) GiLMan, Brig. Gen. Ihave this moment received this second dis- patch from General Gilman, dated this morn- ing from Slagal’s Ferry, on the Cumberland river. | SLAGAL’s Ferny, April 1.—I underrated the enemy's force in my first report of yester- day's fight. Theyhave over twenty-six h dred men, outnumbering us more than two to one. During the night their troops recrossed the Cumberiand in three places. We have re- taken between three and four hundred cattle. The entire rebel force has been driven out of Central Kentucky, and much of their phunder recaptured. Their reported force has been greatly exaggerated, as wellas the amount of plunder taken by them. Pegram’s loss will not fall short of five hundred men. Brig. Gen. GILMAN. The alacrity with which the troops were concentrated, and the vigorous gallantry of their attacks are highly commendable. A. E. Burssipe, Cen. Commanding.
