Flani- gan, No. 133 North Calvert street, above C tre, by the frequent visits of persons haying bundles, as also a valise. Shortly after they observed two young men named Douglass Thomas, son of Dr. J. Hanson Thomas, and Bruce Price come out of the dwelling with valise and get on a passenger railway car, which conveyed them to the intersection of Baltimore and North streets. Suspecting something wrong the officers got on the same car, and on reaching the above corner arrested the young men, whom they conducted betore Lieut. Col. Fish, Military Provost Marshal. On the way thither Price acknowledged that they were preparing to go to Richmond. Thomas and Price were lodged in the Middle District Station for an hour or so, at which time the officers, accompanied by Policeman Frost, returned again to Mr. Flanigan’s dwell- ing, which after come delay had been expe- riencedathey succeeded in entering, the two first officers by the rear and Frost by the front. The latter observed Miss Letitia Flanigan, daugpter of the occupant of the dwelling, moving about ina manner indicating that she had concealed abou: her person some article which she was desirous the officers should not get hold of, and at his instance a female was obtaines by whom the young lady was searched. While this task was being executed she took trom her bosom letters, secession flags and music and throwed them into a fire. | by which the greater part thereof was con- sumed. She was arrested by order of the Pro- | yost Marshal, as was also her father, and with Thomas and Price released on parole, for an examination to-day. Inthe valises and bundles there was a great variety of articles, such shoes, &c.—B. he. Cause of the Delay at Charleston. {From the Buffalo Courier, 25th.j We are informed by an intelligent gentleman, late from South Caroliua, and who cam: from Hilton Head in the Arago with Mr. E: son and seyeral naval officers recently, that the reason why Charleston is not attacked is that the Monitors are not fitted for the attack, and must be greatly strengthened to be efficient in the coming conflict. The reader will re- | Taember that it was quite lately stated that the Tebels had removed the lower tier of casemate guns of the forts at Charleston, and had mounted them en barbette. The reason for this is seen in the result of the attack upon Fort McAllister, where seyeral of the assumed impregnable Monitors could not domuch dam- age and were themselves considerably injured by the plunging shot trom the guns of the fort. The rebels discovered what we have to con- | fess, that the decks of the Monitors will not stand plunging shot. d Mr. Ericsson is now preparing in New York a second sheating to protect the decks of these v S. This will take some time, and the attack on Charleston will be delayed a month or two un- less circumstances render it nece the attack before the Monitors are s so as tocertainly and successfully cope wits the shore batterie Another cause of delay is the construction of floats to be used in raking the channel} to explode the torpedoes that strew the bottom of Charleston Bay, and thus enable the gunboats to pu afely into action with the | batteries. a 5 8 Es S771t is announced that the young Danish | Princess who has lately become the wite of the | Prince of Wales, dislikes crincline and intends | to put itout of tashion—as fur as her authority in the gay world go—“by appearing in a dress | of reduced circumference.” A quite feasible | experiment for «young bride to be sure: but | it would’nt be surprising if reflection and time | should induce the Princes® to invert that order | of things. Even Jessie must have laughed xt that. Wr Mrs. Partington, reading of the taking of Gen. Stoughton by the rebels at Fairfax Court House, expressed, in her usual diaphonons Way, the idea that: «It wasn’t mueh of an exploit for the rebels to brag of, for her Paul took Stoughton regularly for a good many years, and neyer thought anything of it.” WF Vermont credit is still decidedly 3 par. H @F The Jackson (Miss.) Crisis of the 25th ult. states that a train containing fifty persons, mostly rebel soldiers, plunged into a stream through Chunky Bridge. Nearly all were killed by the concussion or falling timbers, or drowned in the stream. @2 A young girl named Kate Baker was re- cently arrested in Philadelphia charged with enticing small girls into houses of ill-fame- Kate must be a hard case, as the houseof refu ge and house of correction of Philadelphia recently | kicked her out for bad conduct. m2 They have a divorce case in Indiana, growing out of the persistence of a wife with a pretty foot and ankle to go on a skating trolic when her husband had refused his assent.
