Her register eave her rate as 1,692 tens burthen, and when ret Iaunched was intended to carry ten Paixban guns; but during the present war her armament was increased, and consisted of twelve heavy guns. She was a companion vessel tothe Missouri, which was built in the same year as the Mississippi, and was acci- dently destroyed by fire at Gibraltar. During the fight im the Miesiesippi river, which led to the capture of New Orleans, the Mississippi “was placed in the second division of ships, and performed her portion of the ardueus task. She was afterwards attached to the sub-squad- ron wnder Captain Bailey. During the action the Mississippi disabled the far famed (by the Tebels) ram Manassas, which was to have destroyed the whole Union fleet. Since the <aptore of New Orleans this vessel has played mo important part in the Gulf blockading #quacron, and in this last action off Port Hud- son has meta similar fate to that of her sister vessel the Missouri. ‘The flagship of Admiral Farragut, which is reported to be disabled, is ‘he Hartford, a screw steamer of 1,990 tons. &@ The gunboat Sagamore, we learn from Key West, has recently been doing important service on the east coast of Florida, having cruised from Key West as far up as Musquito Inlet. A boatexpedition proceeded to the town of Smyrna, and after a brisk engagement, in ‘which one man was killed and five wounded, succeeded in destroying a.vessel loaded with cotton and ready torun the blockade. Indian River was also cleared of rebels, and their fontraband trade with Nassau broken up. ®7 James H. There wax a tarze amount of c@rtifie tes of indebtedness, tut they are of no nse to the thieves, as pryment was at once stopped. ‘There were also some government bonds, bat they, too, are valueless. The principal part of the money had been sent from Washington, snd was in transitu for the families of soidiers whe are bow with the army. The compan hae determined to make a rigid investigation ot the matter and to trace, if possible, the perpe- traters of the daring robtery. The company a&* once, on the reeript 6! the intelligence, made srrangements to refund to the proper owners all the money lost. The express messenger hes been in the employ of the company only three or four weeks, but he was recently a conductor on the Pennsylvania Central rail- wey. The truth however, is, the class of Southern traitors who compose the rebel congress, will Accept no terms of peace whatever that donot involve disunion henceforth and forever. Davis emphatically declared to Henry May, that if allowed to write their own terms for | a reunion upon a blank sheet of paper, they | would spurn the offer with contempt. Nothing bas since occurred indicating a change of their purpose upon that point. So we presume that no man of sense will be deceived by this trick of Mr. Charies Conrad to help the Northern copperheads to embarrass an energetic pros- ecution of the war by the United States Goy- ernment. A REBELLION AGAINST REBELDOM. The following, taken from a late UVontederate paper of North Carolina, shows that the rebels are having more trouble in their « disaffected" districts : EXCITING TIMES IN HAYWOOD, NORTH cAuo- LINA—WAR AT OUR DOORS. {From the Asiiyille (N. 0.) News.) in another column we have referred to the forcible rescue of the prisoner, Franklin, from the jailof Haywoodcounty. Since that article ‘Was written, a courier has reached this piace in quest of powder, who states that an army of several hundred men from East Tennessee is regularly fortified at the line between Hay- weed county and Tennessee. Some reports put the number at eleyen hundred, but we sup- pose it hardly so large. The militia of Hay- wood, to the number of two hundred and fifty, with sizly Cherokee Indians, were holding them in check. Runners had been sent to General Kirby Smith, intorming him of the cor dition of affairs, and seking tor assistance. We await further information withanxiety. The locality is atout forty-five miles west of this piace, and bordering upon the most disloyal portion of East Tennessee; and the force gathered there is composed probably of disaffected men who haye fied from the'r homes to avoid the con- script law. —————~02-______ THE YAZOO PASS EXPEDITION. This has been the great drawback to our prozre- ams have been so narrow and so per- y crooked, with such sharp bends and , that the vessels were constantly leaving channel on short expeditions inland. On every such occasion. some pertion of the ves- sels would be left hanging upon the timber as mementoes of the trip. When to these inci- dents is udded the trouble of towing three coal barges, the cause of our slow advance will pe at once apprehended. But, happily, we are past these troubles. The Tallahatchie riverswhich we entered last nigint, is a much broader stream than the Coldwater, or the Yazoo Pass, besides having cleared banks, so that vessels can run along at a mod eTate rate of speed, without the danger of bet torn to pieces should an unlneky putt of wind low them en to alee shore. Our advent into these waters seem to have been anticipated for sume weeks: yet we have on from he enemy ions, however, : neurly every step, that preparations are ma. king to receive us lower down the country. Previous io our coming into the river, the rebels had sent boats up to the head waters of this stream, levying contributions of cotton to build brenstworks with. The location of the cotton forts this builtis not so readily ascer- tained. Accounts are very conflicting. Some reports say that we will find them at Green- wood, on the Yazoo river, four ntiles beiow its bead, while others persist in saying that we shall meet with no Obstacles until we reach Yazco City. Ali that we know definitely is, that we have met with no enemy as yet. Not a shot has bean fired at any boat of the fleet. Not a guerilla bas shown himself at any point. Not even a rebel scou! or picket bas been Giscovered since the expedition lef! the Mississippi river. This y be alla part of a very nicely conceived and arranged pian to lure us on as far into the interior and away tri reinforcements as pos- sible, with the exy tion of thea making mince meat of us all, or taking os, in une grand body, prisoners of war; but ihe fact, nevertheless, exists, thal we have moved threvgh a region that seems to have known nothing of war before, and to haye hat no ap- prehensions that ihe dreadful scourge would ever be brought to its own midst.
