The bombardment was continued after the burning of the Nashvilie purely fer experimental prac. tice by the iron-ciads and mortar vessels, more particularly the latter. The torpedo explosion under the Montauk tock place as the latter was moving out from Fort McAllister. fhe injury done was so tri- fling as not to give a high idea of the Rebel in- fernal machines. { Though the explosion was | directly under the bottom of the Montauk, the | enly damage done wus a slight crack in one of the piates, which was repaired in a couple of hours. The destruction of the Neshyille was a most | importapt work, a8 she was a superior apeci- men of naval architecture, swifter than the Alabama, and fitted out with a superb arma- ment. The mischief she might have done, if let loove among our unarmed merchantmen, is almost incalculable. Gen. Hunter and Admiral Dupont keep their plans 50 close that the Rebels are yet uncertain which point (Savannab or Charleston) is first te receive the attentions of the threatening Fed- erul forces. It may be some days yet before their doubt is relieved, as certain appliances invented by Capt. Ericsson for removing ob- structions require to be supplied. Four out of five of these, sent out in tow from New York, foundered on the way. When these are ready, the pile drivers of Charleston ard Savannah — one or both—will haye au opportunity to pit their appliances against the genius of the in- yentor of the Monitor.
