M.—As a negro, who committed au owtrage upon ayoung white girl, was being taken from the court-room to jail, under escort of the military, this after- noon, an attempt to get possession of the culprit was made by a gang of rowdies. Two of them were fired on, aud one man was Killed and reveral wounded. Feing fciled in their attempt to get possession of pe negro, the mob perpetrated the most horrible outrages upon fthe colored people re- siding in the vicinity of the jal. Houses were gutted and burned, and the inmates maltreated, and, in many instances, killed. Tenor fifteen lives have already been lost, and as many houses burned. Atl the available military here and a regiment in the interior of the State have been seut for, anda vigorous Attempt will now be made to quell the riot. Great Union Meeting at New York. New York, March 6.—A grand meeting of the loyal peopie of New York, irrespective of party, was held here to-night, at the Cooper Institute, attended by over 4,000 people inside and the ssme number outside. ‘The meeting inside was presided over by Mayor Opdyke, Gen. New York, March 7.—The Post says that the steamer Northern Light, which arrived here this morning, was ckased en Tuesday morning last, off the coast of Florida, by a pro- peller steamer, which, when first seen, carried a signal of distress, but subsequently gave chase to the Northern Lightand continued it until a Federal war vessel hove in sight.
