We apprehérd’ there can be no doubt what- ever of the correctn of the rebel newspaper Rccount—received Iast might hy the President through a despaten from Gen. Dix at Fortress Monroe—aaying that our forces have taken Fort McAlister. We learned positively on the day befors yesterday, from Hiiton Head, that the combined land andwaral expedi:ion that Jett tint point last was destified to take that fort. an@ went fully prepared so tu do. Its succéss is of great importance, not only as’ giving as possession of thé fortification {n'ques- tion, but a» proving the fighting qualitias of the new iron-clad Monitors, none which had pre- viously tried their aggressive capabilities. 1t will be remembered’ that when the Mon- tauk not long since laid’for hours under the eune of McAllister, she was but trying her powers of resiztance. And further, that after submitting herself to that test, the rebels boaat- @d as vehemently that McAllister would prove - invulnerable to the iron-ciads, as they now boast that their fortifications in Charleston harbor will prove. SECESL “ GNASHING ITS TRETH.”" Under the head of + The Revolution Complete,” the New York #zpress of yésterday groans excrutiatingiy over the action of Congress to put down the rebellion. It is thus moved to tears by the -nactment of the law authorizing the suspension of the writ of Aabeus corpus, when that may be necessary to defeat the machinations of treason at the North, of the couscription set, ard of the bunk and loaa bill, ail of which are hailed with joy by all who are Botireeking to aid tne oligarchy to destroy the Unicr and obliterate the Constitution under the bypocritical pretense of du fending both. We sul-mil, that by this time all comprehend that the rei#ilion cannot be suppressed if i: is to have the benefit of such immunity for those St the North who seek to sid it directly and jnditecty, 48 they can obtain throuzh having tie sbir 1d of the ordinary laws’ delays and the s)mpatby Of admisistrators’ of the law who Mey be disleyal at heart, thrown around them. ‘The ofigarchy anerrstand this mater. If any man dar- m. rely breathe audible sym- pxthy with the cause of the Union where they have power at this time, the instant forfeiturs FY of his property and liberty, and frequenily of his life, are the penalty. tower through eel canee to take nothing whatever through active sympathy with iton the part of any in th-ir miet Henee half tac success with which they Dave go far maintained the struggle. Tho en- | Actment of this first portion of the indictm=nt | of the Express proves, we rejoice to be able to write, Mat the Union cause is henceforth to Profit by the lesson im this matter they have | tangh | Dut tor their early resort to conscription they } world long since have been obliterated asa | Wwar-maxing power. Answering their ends so | well, sll will realize that it will answer oar ence even better. That it isa matter of pure | mecessity with us, unless we would consent to pence on the termsof the oligarchy—the per. meacaot destruction of the Union and the con- sequent permanent annihilation of every in- ; tercet Of society in the loyal States—all now koow. Knowing this fact, the country will appreciate the objections of the copperheads to reecrting to that policy, at their true value—as | Smounting simply to efforts to aid the oligarchy | in permanently destroying the Union. That the Government must imperatively use | all possible means to sustain its credit during | the war, in order to carry it on to a successfuy | termination, is another axiom of the times so self-evident, as that he must be blind indeed, who dos not comprehend its truth. The £z. press realizes it, and as ils purpose is to defeat the efforts of the Government to preserve the Uniua, it of course enters 8 caveat to the enact- Ment of the bank and joan law. | 1n truth, the passage of these three bills will be received by the country as an earnest that the war for the Union is no longer to be cbi'd’s play, but rather an exertion of the power of the Joyal worthy of their stake in- | volved. The fact that the Express states that there was no decisive success en either side looks ominous for the Rebels. We shall probably have something further from that quarter before going to press. HIGHLY IMPORTANT NEWS, ee The Capture of Savannah's Principal De- femse—Fort McAllister in Possession of the Union Forces—Official Despatches to the President of the United States. ae er Last evening the President received an of- ficial dispatch from Gen. Dix, dated Fortress Monroe, March 3d, stating that rebel papers had been received there, containing the impor- tant intelligence that Fort McAllister had fallen into the hands of the Unior forces. This fort is the principal defense of Sayan. nah harbor, and several weeks aga we chroni- cled the fact that the Eriesson battery Montauk, under the command of Capt. Worden, of Moni- tor fame, had attacked it, and after sustaining a Lombardment of several hours retired. The rebels at that time were loud in their boastings that the attack was a real one, and that the Montauk was worsted in the engage. ment. But knowing ones knew that the attack was only a feint for the purpose of gaining inférmma- tion as to the whereabouts of the rebel guns, and their calibre, so that when an attack on a larger scale should be made, it would be with the fuil knowledge of the positionand Strength of the rebeis. This information was gained, and immediate- ly a most formidable expedition was planned to reduce the rebel stronghold. The first intimation that we hayeof thisresult being accomplished is through rebel sources; beta vesrel from Admiral Dupont's tieet may be expected at any moment. ‘t he batteries to be now reduced are far infe- rior in strength to, Fort McAllister, and as the Jatter has fajien into our hands the others will undoubtedly share the same fate.
