The fair was formally opened last night by Mayor Wallach, who, ina tew appropriate remarks, introduced Dr. Solger, who delivered a brief address. A brass band was in attend- ance, and there was also brilli nt performances uron the piano. During the evening, the Board of Aldermen of the city visited the Hall by in- Vitation. The taste of the ladies has been fully pd in the decorations of the Hall, which are truly beautiful. Flags, banners, and mot- toes of cifferent kinds are displayed upon the walls and suspended over the tables, while fes- teons and wreaths of evergreen and ivy added to the attraction. Thetables havea lavish pro- fusion of fancy and useful articles, luxuries and refreshments, and the supper table was arranged in attractive style, and the display of edibles were remarkably tempting. The fair continues throughout the present week a ea Mason Jones Last EvENtNG.—The oration at Willard’s Hall, last evening, by Mason Jones, was a triumph in the way ot oratory. ‘The subject selected was Garibaldi; and, as it | was the orators first appearance in this city, much curiosity was excited to listen to that which Mason Jones had to say of the great Italian, and in what manner he would Say it. The ball was consequently crowded. CGon- tinuous applause accompanied the oration from | its attractive opening to its brilliant and most | eloquent peroration. This applause had a cessation only when the thrilling manner in which some parts of the narration was given, compelled the audience to listen with deep and absorbing silence. On Wednesday evening, Mr. Jones is to lecture on Curran—a subject which will doubtless be treated by him in the mesteloquent manner. It will be the recital by an eloquent Irishman of the story of the stormy period of Ireland's history. It will in- fallibly attract a very large house. ae Forrtn WARD STATION Caazs.—Wm.
