OUR MILITARY BUDGEF. —— MORE CAPTURES LY OUR NAVY, i VALUABLE CARGOES TAKEN. berate anes DESTRUCTION OF RBBEL SALT WORKS. ——— The following captures are reported in dis- patches received at the Navy Department te- dry: The U.S. barque Roebuck captured, Dec. 27, 1862, the white-washed English schooner Kate (formerly the Elizabeth Russell, of Key West), +3 tons burden, with a cargo of salt, coffee, cop- peras and liquors, while attempting to run into St. Marks river, Fla. She was dispatched to Key West for adjudication. The U.S. Steamer Tahoma captured, in Tam- pa Ray, Fis, January Sth, the Rebel sloop Siles Henry. When first discovered she was ashore, abandoned, and on fire. On being boarded and the fire extinguished, the hull and the cargo, consisting of fifty bales of sea island cotton, were found to have escaped material injury, 2nd were taken to Key West. On Jan. 1Qth, the U.S. barque Ethan Allen destroyed a very large salt manufactory near the old town of St. Joseph's, Fla. Three boats were sent sshore at daylight, and found the salt works in full operation, the workiuen hay- ing fied in great haste, leaving their breakf4-ts cooking overthe fire. Thismanutactory, which Was capable of turning out seventy-five bush- els of salt per diem, is the fourth destroyed by the Ethan Allen. On the 30th of December, 1962, the U.S. barqno Gem of the Sea, captured the small sloop Ann, of Nassau. manned by threé colored men and one white boy, (aU British subjects.) inside of Jupiter Inlet, and bound upIndita River Her cargo consisted of 16 bags salt, and smu quin- tities of coffee, flour, potatoes, pipes, mats s soap, ke. The vessel, being oldiuad leaky, wis desiroyed, together with the s: ned iat February 1, the U.S. schooner Pwo tender to the U.S. frigat % tured, off Boeco Grande, Fla, the sioo: ards, from Havana, bound to Mat tmoras, with & carze of salt, coffee, liquors, shoes, Ae. Farragut: Fiac-suip Hartronn, >) New Oricans, Januaty 29, 1-3. § Sir: I herewith enciose the report of Acting Masur J. A. Hannum, of the Harriet Lane, which you will perceive the exagzerations which have b-ed circulated concerning the de- fence of thar yessel; also, the pusillanimons conduct of the officer who accompanied tha flag of truce, and corohorated to Lieut. Com. Law the enemy's statement. that all theoffic-rs end crew ot the Harriet Lane had perished, tAve come tenor fifteen persons; whereas there were searcely that number of killed and wounded. I take it for granted thatof the nine slightly wounded the greater part amounted to norbing, so that the te-t:mony of the rebel Pilot Was very near the truth when he said five killed and six or eight wounded 1 cannot think but that for the death of Com. Wainwright and Lieut. Com. Lee, the vessel could not have been captured. It is difficult, however, to conceive a more pusillanimous surrender Of a vessel to an enemy already in our power than occurred in the case of the Harriet Lane. Very Tespectfally, your obedient servant, D.G. Farracut, Rear Admi Hon. Gipgox WEL-zs, Secretary of the Navy. The following casvalties are reported by Acting Master J. A. Hannum, the senior officer surviving of the U.S. steamer Harriet Lane: Killed—J. M. Wainwright, commander: Ed- ward Les, utenant commander, ex-offic: r; Jos. Pollock, landsman; John Hart, do.: Henry Newton, first-class boy. Fifteen are reported wounded. Ten offi-ers and eighty-two petty officers and men are held aa prisoners of war. HE STYLES IT A REEDER SUR- ARRESTS AND SEIZURE The Provost Marshal of the War Department, Col. L. C. Baker, and his corps, on the night before last, made one of the most important arrests and seizures occurring since Col. B's installation, though they sre daily makin= dis- coveries and arrests, which, in the augregate, bave been of most important advantage to the Peblic interest, especially in the way of the recovery of stolen Government property. In this cAse the principal party arrested was one J. T. Brooke, who originally made his appear- ance here last summer, in the guise of a Union refugee of Virginia. As such he obtained a pass, at that time frem General Wadsworth, enabling him to travel unmolested between ‘Washington and the army, to trade with the iater. Circumstances in his condact not long siace brought him under Vol. Baker’s suspicion of being extensively engaged in contraband trade with the rebels, and his movements were accordingly narrowly watched, until, on the occasion above referred to, he was caught in flagrante delietu, and medicines costing about fourteen thousand dollars, were seized as they ‘were being taken from a cellar te be transported | to the rebels. . | According to what the detectives say they } have been able to learn concerning his opera. tions, the goode were purchased at the North by Mr. J. W. Nairn, apothecary and draggist, of this city, and on being landed in front of his store, on Pennsylvania avenue, the marks on the boxes were there taken off, (under the eyes | of @ detective, who watched them from the moment they reached Washiagton,) and they were taken over toin front of the store of Mr. J. B. Dodson, carpet dealer, near by, and by his direction were placed in the cellar under bis store, by an Italian, who ocoupies it. There they were re-directed, and were shortly afer- wards taken by @ negro named Francis to the house of Mr Joba Crambangh, corner of Firet and Frederick streets, Georgetowr. As they wete being tak-n from Crumbaugh’s house, on the evening before Inst, by the negro Francis, the detectives, who were on the watch, seiaed them. Brovk-, who was standing on the oppe- site corner l-oking on, immediately «made wacks™ for the depot, where he was arrested by others of Col. Baker's curps, who were on, the lookout for him there. The house of Cram- baugh was searched, to the intense disgruatle- ment of some of the female in mates, among them a Mise Cynthia Yerby, who fariously rushed up stairs, seized a revolver, rushiod down stairs again and pointed it at one of the detectives, daring him to attempt to take hor ta the Old Capitol, as he had hinted he mizht he ompelled to do uniess she kep: a more civil tongue in her head while he and his companions were discharying their duty om the promi as. ‘The goods seized in the possession of Lirooks were 1,2 ounces quinine, (¢ sting 26 Per oz.,) 1,000 ounces of morphine, (costing $7 per oz,) © pounds opium and 2! pounds nitrate of «i!- ver. The sea broke heavily on the Isth and igth, from one end of the shoals to the other, and nothing drawing over six feet warer could have Possi- bly crossed the bar, and nothing could have pa-sed through the gunboats anchored there without being seen, although the nicht was very dark. Subsequently the officers accom. ponying the flags of truce tried to create the impre=sion that she is out—one of them saying so plainly. I don’t believe it. ‘This morning Lieut. Mitchell reported that he could vee a square-rigged vessel, sails loosec, from the maintopmast head, which he takes to be the Harriet Lane. She lies beyond the upper harbor, in the direction ot Virginis Pcint, and was doubtless carried over the shual waters by the rise during the beayy easterly weather. There is not a word of truth Im this statement. They do not pay a single penny of this tax ; all of which 1s openly assessed by them on the publishers to whom they erll, and duly paid by the latter to the paper makers to indemnify them for the 3-per-. centum tax upon their wares.
