Mr. McLain preached at ieKendree Chapel a discourse on the subject | ef colonization, taking for his text, «Ethiopia shail stretch forth her hard to God,” giving a running history of the efforts to christianize Africa, aud the failure of the whites in the work on account of the climatg, but by the in- troduction of the blacks christianity had gained a foothold. During the sermon a number of Persens rose and left the church, apparently unider the belief that the discourse was to be of un sboliion character, anda number of soldiers present behaved in a disorderly manner, one of them (apparently intoxicated) risingand asking “it the speaker was so fond of the nigger why he did not take his musket and fight for them,” accompanying the remark with an oath. The meé soldier, & short time afterwards, got up took Disseat direetly in front of the min- ister. A number of persons, mostly ladies, at this juncture left the church, thinking probably that there was & prospect of a row, but the *r took no notice of those leaving or those inclined to be divorderly, and very com- yoredly finished bis discourse, making no ellnsions whatever to politics. Aiter the congregation was dismissed, and as Mr. McLain was leaving the church, a «towd of young men were noticed to follow very closely behind him, and some of his friends thinking that perhaps they were bent on some- thing mischievous, requested two policemen to ioilow him home, in order to be near should 6) y violence be attempted. ae See i Fourts Warp Station Oaems—Before Jus- | fie Ferguson.—S. Besides this establishment is immediniely ad. joining the First Baptist Charch, and is a fource of annoyance on that account. The etitioners set forth that they have reason to lieve that said honse, No. 42, is kept or used as a bawdy house, and the petitioners beg to pectable families rid of the “annoy. ance and danger arising from the bad deport- ment and behavior of women of loose char- acter; and the constant inquiries of bad men at the doors of eur residences and those of others, to be directed to said house No. 402, which has frequently occurred.” In furtherance of this object, they ask the assistance of the Metropol- itan Police. The houst referred to isa fine, large brick building, and is familiarly known among sport- ing men as the “Club House.” In compliance with the request of the petitioners, Superin- tendent Webb issued an order to the Second Ward patrol, under Sergeant Reed, to take charge of the house and arrest all the inmates. Between eight and nino o'clock the patrolmen wentto the house and entered the premises. They found only Mary Palmer anda colored servant, but the rooms gave evidence of a hasty exit of others before the officers arrived, show- ing that some party had given them informa- tion of the approach of the police. This morn- ing, she appeared for trial before Justice Drury on the charge of keeping a bawdy house. It could not be proved that Mary Palmer was mistress of the house. But tho citizens sum- moned as witncsses testified that the house was & common reeort.of military and civilians. Women also were frequently passing in and ‘cut, Sundays as well as during the week, and the noise disturbed families in the neighbor- hood. Hacks stopped in front of the house in considerable numbers. Mr. Plant testifled that many of the women poe visited there were undoubtedly of itl- ame. Justice Drury decided that the charge against the prisoner not being sustained, it was his duty to dismiss the ca-e. He advised the ser- Reant who holds the keys of the house to turn them over to the superintendent, that the Pro- prietor may call upon him forthem. Evidence as to who is the proprietor was not admissible, and the examination was confined strictly to the case of Mary Palmer. the signed by es STEALING GOVERNMENT Baas.—Fora month or two past large numbers of bags used by the T corps have heen missed from theshons of the 50th New York Regiment, near the Navy Yard; and reeently Capt. Hine determined that the matter should be cleared up, and after investigation on Monday he gave information to the police, and officers Harrison, Harbin and Pumpbrey arrested the following: Alfred Bur- cine, Wm. Arnold, John N. Gates and Josoph Gordon, who reside in the neighborhood of the camp, and Charies.Carr and Samuel Palmer, two soldiers belonging to the regiment. The parties were tuken before Justice Cull, ard the two soldiers were charzed with the larceny of the bags, and were sent to jail for court, and the others were charged With buying them and all except the first named were held to bail for court; Mr. Rerdine being dismissed, In the course of the trial it leaked ont that Mr. Gates was guilty of selling liquor to soldiers, and he was fined $20. Bocts Bayk.—Superintendent Webb has received information from the chief of police of Louisville, Ky., that a man, giving his name as Holland, had been arrested with the sum of $40,000 on the Free State Bank of the District of Columbia. The bills were of the denominations of ones, fiyes, and tens. The backs of the bills are green, somewhat in the style of the U. S. treasury notes, w. tha words “secured by special deposit with S. A. Mills, banker, 51 Exchange Place,New York.” S. Ross is represented as president of the bank, and W. H. Bernes, cashier. The bills bear the imprint of the New York Bank Note Company, 50 Wall strect. In appearance the bills are well calculated to deceive. The fives are beautifully executed. Of course thére is no such bank 4s the Free State Bank of the District of Columbia, and the whole thing is a fraud on a grand scale. The autbdorities hava no idea who this man Holland is, or where he came from. Some of the guard went into other rooms and found several soldiers in bed, who were taken out and escorted to the guard- house. The police took charge of the girls— Elizabeth Gray, Margaret Hays, Mary Tapley, Ann Pumphrey, and Mary Jones—and escorted them to the lock-up, where they were kept all night, but dismissed in the morning. Previous to the descent there bad been a disturbance in the house, a soldier having fired a pistol through the door, and, after getting in, threatened to shoot a woman.
