The strong rebel position on the Arkansas iver has been taken by our troops, and Arkan- sas Poet is now in our hands. patebes it appears that the struggle com:nenced at Arkansas Post on the evening of January 10, and on the Lith the rebels, finding that they had Bo hope, unconditionally surrendered the whole arrieon, fortifications, armaments, munitions, @., to our forces. Our troops had been so Placed that it was impossible for the rebels. who mbered some 7,000 strong, to have escaped, om if they had attempted it, as their retreat ‘was cut off on both sides of the river. VALUE OF TRE POSITION TO THE REBELS. The rebels haye selected this position for the @efense of the which is the highway @apital of the State. bends of the river, the guns of the fort had been erected at that point could easily have Swept from the waters any vessels that might attempt to paca up the stream. The levee fermed # kind of arezdy-made breastwork for riflemen and others, who would have soon sleared the deck of any small yessels—and barge ones could not have ascended the river — ef any aumber of men attempting to man the guns. Thus it would have appeared to have been an Mm possibility for our troops to have reached the eapital of Arkansas from the Mississippi river while the Rebels held the position. A square fort, with bastions, had been erected, and waa Sttied up with nine guns, four of which were 22- peunders, one 100-pound Parrott gun, and the remainder of good size. All these, with a large @uaantity of munitions of war, have fallen into @ur hands. So valuable was the it consid- ered that over 7,000 men were detafied te guard ‘Mt, and these have ail become prisoners of war. The fort is built on the first bluff of the Arkan- sas river, and is situated about 70 miles by water from its mouth. The channel being w Latte Rock, the hich somewhat narrow and tortuous, rendered the © Place more than doubly secure from capture by water. SKETCH OF ARKANSAS Post. Arkansas Post is a post village and the capi- te] of Arkansas county, State of Arkansas, and as sxtuated on the lett bank of the Arkansas river. It is about fifty miles in a direct line from the Mississippi river where the Arkansas empties into ft, and about one hundred and | seventeen miles in an air line, drawn sonth- sa sepa | from Little Rock, the capital ef the State. Ithad a landing for steamboats previons te the rebellion, and then contained several | stores. But, like many qther villages in the Sowth. it has suffered considerably from the | effects of the war and the blockade of the rivers, from which it gained its somrce of existence. it was settled by the French in 1665, and was for many years the depository for all the peltries ef this region. Arkansas county is situated in south-soutieasicrn portion of the Sta, and contgins twelve hundred square miles, or seven bundred and sixty-eight thousand acres. ‘he White river flows along its ernetern border. The surface of the country is generally level, and some valuable prairie land is in the Vielnity. about one-third of the country being | eccupied by @ portion of the grand prairie, Which is the largest in the State. The soilof wbis part is yery fertile, and adapted to the enitnre of both corn and cotton. The rivera are navigable tor flat-bottomed steambocis during the greater part of the year. Arkansas ecunty had in 1560 & population of +=, of whom 3,923 were white and 4,91 were slaves, Of the free, 2.094 were males and < females. it will thus plsinly appear that t garrison was not supplied from the country only in which the fortifications were built, although, deubtless, all the able-bodied males were con- e«eripted by the Rebels. Discovery or a New QuaprrreD.—A new guadruped has been discovered in Madagascar | and anageat of the French Academy of Sciences has forwarded to that body an account of it. it belongs to the genus J/ndris, and is described a: having a snout like that of a King Charles lapdog, the skin of the face being bare and of a wt-black tint. Its fnr is long and woolly: its <4 or rather hands, are bare aud slack; the lonrth finger is the longest; the thumb of the bind paws Cie perar 3 the great we) is very thick and flattened.
