Soot strretns es eee obvious there are laid be- { netith our feet records of millions of ages ante- | They Tior to anything yet known, and these records j Pe want the cultivated and intelligent mind , to fully develop them. The same process of | creation which prevailed in past age« prevails now, 18 has been demonstrated by recentexper- iments in the bed of the ocean. The antiquity of man constitutes a most in- teresting study, and all people, whether rude | or cultivated, exhibit their conceptions of what th: y suppose the primary existence of man. While the Bible should be adhered to in the study of man, yet men of science should not be tied dow n to modern interpretation of the Serip- tures. . The speaker noticed the fact that we are too apt te limit the date of definite antiquity to the time of Romans. This was one of the er- rors of & purely Classical education. Prior to the h'story of the Romans, the history of man may be said to bo all unwritten, and it is to that which the lecturer called attention. The mod- ermness of Roman history should be impressed on every mind, and it must also be remembered that when Cesar landed in Britain, that time had just commenced which St. Pgul designated “these last days.” The study of Roman aati- quities cannot fally conimand the mind, be- canse archieology js notso much depended on try and matory. } he lecturer then referréd to thegliscoveries tnade in Scandinavia, which was in a measure a “virgin soil,” because Rome had never oxite Ge Ber conquests thus far, and all that Was found was purely an evidence of au eariy existence of man. Dae period when men worked only in stone, and without the use and knowl- edge of metal=, might bé designated the stone period. Then followed the bronze period, when a kuowledge of working in tin and copper was developed, as re’ sull found in numerous countries show. “ween these periods the copper period which is developed in thi: country, which is also in a measure “virgin, because it had never been trod by the feet of the Greeks and Romans. All these relics, found in graves, tumuli and mounds, the evi- dences of skill in workmanship, and in coun- tries remote from the most ancient civilized nations, show;the existencé.of man long before the date of any written history. Among the proofs mentioned wus that ef the discover in20, at ihe foot of the Grampian Hills, i land, of the skeleton of a whale long, and twenty miles from the st tidal | flow. All writfen history proves that but little change has been made in the position of these hills and the tide, and as it would have been impossible to carry a whale eighty feet long a distance of twenty miles, it is evident that the there slain long, long ages ago, whe: ulers of the sea layed the base of the Grampian Hills. Long, too, before the time of the Romans, for a Roman road runs over the very fleld on which this skeleton was found. That man was there is evident, for 2 rude stone harpoon, with which the-amonster side, Wherever even the rudest implements | are found there is an evidence of reason: for unressoning beings neyer make improvement®. _The second lecture of the course will be given on Friday evening next.
