Mr. Nevill, who has been officiating as the chaplain of thr prison at Salisbury, was called on, anti after conzratulating them on their safe arrival at the capital of the nation proceeded to describe some of the atrocities committed ‘upon the Union prisoners, He had seen them refuse to leta son see where they buried his father who had died in the prison from ill-treat- ment. He ence believed that the reports which had been published were false, but when he had tasted the bitter cup he could say that « the half had not been told.” One of them had come to the city a walking skeleton, scarcely able to stand. When they were about leaying Rich. mond they eaid‘that they were going to « Abra- dam's borom;” and im a manner they were r! for that city was so like an earthly hell, while this was iike an earthly paradise. When their friends sent thim money it was rarely that all was given them, & portion being kept by their Confecerate guarde. He had seen the South in its days of prosper- ity, having been born and raised there, but a@tiled in Minnesota a few years ago. Last summer he was arrested at Raleigh because he bad seitied among the Yankees, and was ireated with every indignity, having his pockets g#earched and his papers looked over; but not. withstanding he had the proper papera—a pass from Grn. Foster at Newbern to pass the iines under flag of truce—he was cast into a Jail. An effort was made to xet him out under a writ of habeas corpus, but Judge Saanders retused, saying that be must “ get in the canoe with them, and if it sink be must sink with them.” In the 2emeé prison at Salisbury they put in, among ethers, seyeral idiotic and insane rebels, wRo bet to add to their misfortunes. ©. The allow- ance of stationery for each teacher shall not exceed $2.50 per annum. No text books shall be used except those prescribed by the Board of Trustees. The physical education and com- fort of the scholars is also under the care of the teacher.
