THE NEW —_——> DB. COLENSO's WORK ON THE PENTATEUCH. THE MOSA:C RASORD UNINSPIRED. ——$——— The Pentateuch and Book of Jozshns Crit:- eally Examined by the Right Rey. Johu Wil- Mam Colenso, D. D., Rishop of Natal"—is the fall tide of the book just published in England, ‘which has created a greater excitement among the theologians than even the famous “Essays and Reviews.” Dr. Colenso puts forth a new ° heresy, not only denying the divine inspiration ef the Pentateuch, but roundly ssserting that the statements made in the Mosxic record are torically trae. As Bishop of Natal, says the Loudon Examiner, be bas, devoting bimself with the utmost prac- teal zeal to his duty, studied the Zuln tonzua, avd published a Zulu Grammar and Diction- ary, re proceeding.by the ard of the natives to transiate the Scriptures. He has translated into Zulu the w of the New Testament apd several parts of the OW, including the books of Genesis and Exodus, but white cn- upon that werk, under interrogation his mative belpers, he was brought, he | says, face to face with old difficulties that in England micht be felt but tolerated. In announcing the startling conclusions at which be bus arrived, Dr. Colenso dwells upen his carly doubts end shows how the questions of a barbsrian puzzied him. But, on the whole, I found so much of Divine Light and Life in these and other parts of the Sacre< Book, so much wherewith to feed my o foul and the souls of others, that 1 was conte to take all this for granted, as being true in th main, however wonderful, and as heing «t Jeast capable, in an extreme case, of some «uf ficient expla on. “Here, however, as I have said, araidst my work in this jand, i haye been bronzht face to face with the very questions which L thea put by.
