THARKeervrnc Day.—No paper will be is- ened from this office on to-morrow, Thanks, giving Day. 7 THE MORNING PRESS. Parte hiheod is occupied with news mat- TS jay. i Te itines treating upon “Thé Posi- tion’ thinks the Rebels will contest every inch of the road te Richmond, and says: «The pyblic here manifest no impatience wpon the subject. Confidence in the streng:h Quod bravery of the Army of the Potomac is universal, ard so also is the belief that it will be pushed ferward with all the speed which is consistent with prudence.’ Just 20; but the Republican has only lately got “to ere it.” ‘The Chronicle treate upon “Old-line Whigs” and « Deposed European Rulers.” +e — Exouisn Orska—tTux Ricurxcs TRorer— «The Enchantress” has been brought out at Ford's in good style—unusually good, when it is considered that its production involves a considerable outlay for scenic display, ballot and other accessories necessary to its rendition. The houses Monday night and last night (de- spite the bad weather) indicate, we are glad to easy, that Mr. Ford will not be leer by his enterprise. ‘With the capabilities and qualities of voice ofthe Kichings, father and daughter, the masical public here are familiar. Mr. Rich- ings holds his own as an actor, and Miss Richings’s delicious but not powerful voice etrikes us as never more exquisite in quality. She was applauded and encored again and Sgain and again last night; and, in fact, the in- judiciously-displayed enthusiasm of some of her sdmirere interered sadly to prevent the full enjoyment of some of her finest efforts. Among the gems of the performance wus her Fendition of Baife's besutiful aria in the second act, “Woman's Heart,” the legend of the “Young Nadir,” by the same compoeer, and her varia- tions to the celebrated “Pirate's Chorus.” Mr. James Dunn, the tenor, displayed good. taste and no inconsiderable ability. ‘The chorus of the Richings company is good, ‘&6 is also the ballet, and the scenic effects, prop- erties, Ac., noticeably so. The illusion as to time and place would perhaps be better main- tained by expunging the iettering, «G. ® T. Parker, Wsehington, D.C.,” from the head of the barrel that figures so conspicuously amongst the piuncer of the Sicilian pirates. Mr. E. H. Brick, always good, and Mr. W. H. Yailey, one of the very beet “ old men” that bas ever appeared here, both members of the regular stock company at Ford's were capital in th: ir reepective parts. ‘The Enchantress is repeated to-night. &7 The Chicago Journal understands that the following is the position of the army in Southwest Ti nnessce and North Mississippi. General Graut is with the center, between La- @rsoge ond the Cold Water; Gen. C. S. Hamil- ton is nexr Helly Springs; Gen. Sherman is at Davi-'s Bridge, southeast of Memphis: Gen. Hurltu: is at Memphis, in temporary command of the pest. The enemy has been concentrating considerable force at Jacksgn, Miss., under Pemt ren. GENFRAL MeDUWELL's COURT OF INQUIRY. ‘The Court mét yesterday morning at eleven o'clock. A commenication was received from | the Adjutant General's office, containing tho | chargre mentioned‘in Gen. McDowell's letter to the President. Anorder was given to clear the room until the court concluded upon a course of action, and as to whether or not the trial should be made public asit progresses. There was along consultation pon the matter. Atip.m.the doors were thrown open, and Colonel Pelouze announced the result of the deliteration to te that Gen. Mc Dowell should recommend some plan for proceeding ia the case, and lay it before the Board, with a list of his witnesses; and that the Court would indi- vidually digest the several plans of investiga- tion and come to some concinsion. Gen. Cadwalader thought as the case was in emt-ryo, and as euch a one had never before been known of, it was necessary to adopt some arrangement toproceed. It was :tlao necessary to get alist of the witnesses to be exarained, and the Cgurt would be happy to hear any suggestions that General McDowell chose to Tanke. Gen, McDowell remarked that he had no othe? plan than that expressed in the letter. That it was for the Court to consider whom he acted subordinate to and with, and to investi- gate his conduct at that time. Gen. Cadwalader thouyht the best way to Teach the point was through Me Dowell fur- nishing the specifications and witnesses; then it would take along while to go through the papers at the Adjutant General's office. Gen. Martindale remarked that it wa< not im- perative ahat the Court followed the sugges. | tions of Gen. McDow: Il, but that they wished | him to give his idea of matters. Gen: Cadwalader said, then matters arise at once that ean better be learned from MeDowell. He krows if any commancer has censured him, or made any allegations in any report. If so, | when and where! Gep. McDowell replied, that he wonld pre- pere a listof witnesses and som suggestions | by to-morrow. General Martindale said they would not be beund by any plan, but they wanted McDow- | ls ideas of the case. The Court then adjonrned. Ss TO-DAY. The court met at 11 a.m. Recorder Lieut. Col. Pelouze read the pro- | ceedings of yesterday in detail. * Major General McDowell then, in accordance with the understanding had with the Court, read a paper containing his views of a pian to be followed in making the investigation, in which be recapitulated at length the history of | Lis several commands and services asa general officer, and proposed that his acts since being msc a Major General should be the subject of the investigation; as Congress had thoroughly investigated and reported on his career as a Brigadier General. 1t explained that while he could not prove a direct negative of the allega- tion that he had been treacherous, he asked leave to show by bis specific acts that he had at all times been loyal. It asked that his correspondence with the enemy’ commanders and with disloyal per- sons—Mrs. Robert Lee and Mrs. Fitzhugh— within the enemy's lines, be examined by the court. it further requested scrutiny into his con- duct with reference to the inhabitants of the” ccuntry in which his several commands had Operated. It next sugersted the propriety of investi- eanng whether be had been faithful to those communders placed over him, and whether he Led in any instance fai to go to the relief of any other commanders—Fremont, Banks and others. « And whether there was any truth whatever in the allegation of drunkenness that had been published against him. e ‘Lo sil these several specifications, which he desired the court to investigate, he appended lists of witnesses, wirose examination he re- quested. ° When he concinded the reading of this pa- Per, the court was cleared for deliberation upon its suggestions. The cqurt remained in consultation with clos'd doors until 24 p.m; and, on opening them, adjourned for the day, THE OLD CAPITOL PRISON. Brig. Gen.
