Baker, detective for tha War Department, was arrested by Officer Nicholl, at Mr. Gould's groggery, in Swampoodle, on Sat- urday night, under the following circamstances: Nicholl was on the opposite side of the street from Gould's, when Mrs. (. bailed him, and Tequested him to come and take charge of a soldier (Jeffers) who was in the house and Would not leave; thatthe man was drunk, as Was her husband; that Gould had a con-ider- ie sum of money and a gold watch, and she Afraid it would be taken from him. Jeffers arrested and taken to the Fourth Ward station house, and, after examination, turned over to the military by Justice Walter. Joffers explained hie character and exhibited a pass, which permitted “bearer” to pass without any name being mentioned. Officer Nicholl then went, as he supposed, to the signer of the pass, but by a strange mistake went to Lisutenant Baker, in the provost marshal’s office, instead of Colwnei Raker. Lieut. Baker ordered Jeffers to be locked up in the Central Gnardhouse until yesterday morning, when Col. Biker heard of the circumstance, and demanded his imm «diate Telense, stating that he was on “special duty” atihe time of his arrest. Jeffers was released. cee Povice MATTERS. -Secend Precinct.—P.
