THE EVENING STAR, | TON _OITY: H mae GuoveMsen 6. 1969. | ~ SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESB. ‘The Inteil-gencer defends iteelf from mistep resentations of certain papers in reference to the Iate ‘article in that paper: « Emancipation aa Expctient, not a Principle.” i The Heputlican thie morning has something more to say in bebalf of Gen. Grant; argues at lenigth that the «T’pion as it was” canhot possi- bly be reconstructed; and defends Gov. An- daz. w of Massachusetts for his refusal to domi- cil the hégroes in Mascachasetts. The Chronicle thinks that if the leaders of the Democracy are true to their antecedents, their instincts, and to their associations during the present war, they will be likely, as soon as they can exercise any power, to use it in favor, of their triends, the high priests of the Uon- federacy,” but does not yet entertain any fears that the Democracy have yet secured the next House, but feels sure even if they have, the war Will go on, if indeed it be not- finished by that time, and carry them along with it in spite ef themselves. The Chronicle has the following: “At halt-; two o'clock this morning we received'a dispatch from the West, indicating the complete triumph of the Missouri emanci- ationists. How well can the Pereret ie poate ba of the | odes with which slavery binds them.” Tue Late Evectiona—Waat Witt Fot- Low.—We are glad to find so temperate, mode- Yate and sensible comments upon the result of the elections of the day before yesterday, in the National Republican, as those that grace the columns of that journal this morning. They are in marked contradistinction from the cur- rent ravings of the New York Tribune. The former journal is quick to appreciate the fact which the latter cannot or will not realize, that the grest mass of the Democrats elected to he next Congress will be quite as prompt to vote money and men to proseente the war for the restoration of the Union, so long as a dollar and aman can be obtained to that end, as any gentleman elected as a Republican. The platform. with reference to the war, upon which the Democratic party went into the recent political canvass, was neither more nor less than the war platform laid down by President Lincofh in his ear! ly war communica- tions to Congress, accepted and enforced by the latter in their origing! resolutions adopted on the subject. There are ten, possibly twenty, men elected to the House as Democrats, who, from the tenor of their speeches in the canvass, and their antecedents, may not be expected to yield the President frank and cordial support im carrying on the war as in his own better judgment he endeaygred, originally, to prose- cute it. Their number, when compared with that of the rest of their party in the House, who will be fotind not at all tinctured with the leayen of treason, is so small that their proba- ble unpatriotic course will effect nothing by ‘way of embarrassing any war measnre of the Government really likely to aid the good c.inse, That the business interests of the couutry already see the results of the election in this light, is apparent in the fact that yesterday the price of gold fell in New York full nwo per cen’ un. In 3 week the political interests of the coun- try—party expectants, recipients and leaders— Will see the result in the s@me light, or we are much mistaken: The ‘first consequence of tis solemn appeal of the people of the loyal States to the Govern- ment to eonfine its war policy hereafter to swuessures in which all loyal men can heartily join, will be the almost instant abnegation of th- dangcrous influence which the counsels of extreme and impracticable men have, unfortu- na‘ety, of late exercised here. The. country, without distinction of party, deeply realize the unselfishness of the Pre-i- dent's patriotism there being even less exireme Demeétats than extreme Republicans who dis- pute it; and be has too much good sense, him- self, to doubt that the great majerity of those whom the people ha ve just selected to aid hima in restoring the oid Union by force of arms, will fail, or evin hesitate for a moment, to perform Unt sacred duty in good faith. GortscHaLK—Patti—The Concert given ast night by Mr. Gottschalk im conjnaction With the charming prima donna Miss Patti, was highly successful. The house was crowd- ed with the elite of our city and seyeral foreign ministers aud other persons of note were pres- ent. Every performance of Gottschalk and Patti was warmly applauded, and there were several vociferous encores. Miss Patti is without doubt the mo-t accom- Plished prima donna on this sid» of the Atlan- tic, and has few equals in the world. She is engaged already for the next London season, and this is in all probability the last opportu- nity we shall have to hear her. Her execution is really wonderful, and sounds like the war- bing of birds. Her voice is of great flexibility, and she achieves the highest notes the human @rgan bas ever prodaced without apparent ef- fort. Those who fail to hear her this eyenin: will lose a great treat. Mr. Gottechaik is too well known here to need any special notice. He is the king of pian- iste adutittedly. His rendition of “Sweet Home" last pight was a most wonderful per- formance. This evening is the last performance of the greatest musical celebrities at present in Amer- ica, and we anticipate a very fullhouse. Seais may be secured at Metzerott’s music store. S7 The President has mitigated the sentence of death, passed upon a private of a loyal Mis. sSeuri regiment for resisting and striking an offi- cer, toone year’s imprisonment, dishonorable dismissal from the service, and Joss of all pay and emoluments. Tue “Mowitor” will be open to the public this (Thursday) afternoon, from one o'clock Until sunset. This is the only opportunity the Public will haveto see her. Passes will not be required atthe navy yard gate. &7 The three disloyal Episcopal clergymen, Bev. Dr. Goodrich, Rev. Mr. Fulton and Rey Dr. Leacock, who have been forwarded to New York from New Orleans by Gen. Butler, will be consigned to Fort Lafayette. FROM FAIRFAX COURT HOUSE, VA. Nov. 6, 1562.—We learn here that General McClellan and his staff arrived last evening at Rectortown, near Front Royal Gap, on this (Manassas (ap) railroad, and makes Kis headquarters there for the time being. It will thus be perceived that his army is making progress down along the ridge. oe Nothing of particular interest occurred im- mediately along.the ridge yesterday, that we have been able to learn, except the general progress of our army indicated by General change ef his headquarters mentioned The impression prevails here that he will probably dispute the possession of the upper valley with Lee, by operations through the Blue Ridge Gap; immediately in front of him; thongh as yet the fact is not known herr posi- tively. _ LATEST hes ak SICKLES' COM- A RECONNOISSANCE IN FORCE. - ie {Special Dispatch to the Star} Manassas Junctis, Nov. 6—Gen. Sickles last eveniitg réturned from making a reconnois- sance in force in front, having penetrated as far as Catlett's Station, driving in the scouts and pickets of the Rebels back on Warrenton Junc- ‘tion, where the enemy are not supposed to be in much force. My belief is, that by to-night, or very shortly afterwards, that point (Warrenton Junction) will be occupied by his troops, who are about to push out from here somewhere, in force. Nothing occurred of particular intere=t during the last reconnoissance of Gen. S. A BATTLE AT NEW BALTIMORE, —— BAYARD’S CAVALRY DRIVES THE ENEMY'S -CAVALRY AND FOUR PIECES OF ARTILLERY TOWARDS WARRENTON. PER epatsla GAINESVILLE, VA., Nov. 6.—Col. Windham, of Bayard’s Cavalry, had-a spirited engage- ment yesterday in front of this point, at New Baltimore, with the cavalry and four pieces of artillery of the rebel forceat Warrenton. Their numbers were about equal to his at the time— say 1,500 strong. After a stout resistance he drove the enemy clear off in the direction of their main body—the town of Warrenton. We have not yet learned the casualties of the aifair on cither side. A MISSING STEAMER. The steamer Trenton, in the service of the Quartermasters Department, loaded with am- wunition, clothing, and other army stores sailed from New York for Washington city on the Sist ult., in company with a sailing ves- sel, which is now in the Potomac.
