dhe ln THE EVENING STAR HORRIBLE OUTRAGE AND wUnvER. Egeitement at Denton, Md.— The Merderer wm by w Mob—His Body tut to Piece< {Correspondence of the Baltimore American.) Dextos, CanoLisy County, Md., Ne Our county for several days past ins beer se@Re of the wildest excit ment. “The most fearinmi pessions of a portion of our citizens Baye been unloosed, and the spirit of mot violence bs its worst ne ae era itwelt amongst iaw-abiding and loys! citizen: The causes which have oe sara upon the pudtic mind, and caused our hitherto «ai-t and oe agg ritizens to tuke the law into theit owt =, ares y these: On Wedner: last, & most brutal murder was perpetrated upon the person of a little cirl, ataughter ot Mr. Edgar Plumatr, tesiding in the upper Gis'riet of this cownty, are@a inte over right years, by a mulatto—a_ fiend in hu- man shape—named Jim Wilson. The ifttle rirl was returning from schovlonw the evening of Ww Jast, when she was overtaken on the road by thr mulatto named above: her per- son violated, and afterward brutally wurd:red. Wilsow was arrested und ee with the crime, to which he plead guilty. He was given mito. the custody,of the offierrs of the law and sent to the jail at this place, and taken into sate keeping by Sheriff Salisbury, where be ac- knowledged his guilt. Upon being asked why he committed the deed, he stated thatthe devil prempted him to the deed,” that he « deserved death, and ought to be hanged.” . Thus things remained until Saturday nignt Inst, when the indignation of the citizens 0! connty reached its culminating point. It wa- plainly to be seen, by our citizens, before might set in, that something more than usual was astir. Numbers of le began to gather. and before balf-past 7.o’clock the town was crow1- At about § o’clock the jail, where the pris- oner was confined, was surrounded by some three or four hundred persons. In a few mo- ments it was entered by the crowd—the duor of the prison forced open—and the prisoner takvn into custody by the mob. A few momentsmore and he was swinging toa limb of a tree on the public <quare m the rear of the jail yard. He had scarcely bech raised above the heads of the crowd before fifteen bullets had perforated his bedy. He wasimmediately cutdown, his thro it eut, dragged through’ some of the more quiet streets of the town, hung again in front of the negro church in astate of nudity, then cut to pirces and burned until the charred and black- ened remains could not be recognized ay those of a human being. A proposition was started by those partici- pating in this brutal and mhuman treatment towards the remains, after life was entirely ex- tinet, to place it in the negro church and de- stroy both the church and the last remains of the criminal; but through the mild and per- suasive influence of Mr. Wm.G. Nicholson and Mr. Thomas Urry, they were forced to yield to their rm quest, and removed the corpse from that vicinity of the town. This is an awful tragedy, and one we are proud to know that no citizen of our town par- icipated in. The Sheriff and our people were overpowered, and could not have prevented the perpetration of the act had they attempted te use violent means. Mild and persuasive means were resorted to, but proved of no avail. Had forcible means been tried there is no tell- ing what would have been the result. Our town, no doubt, would have been lain in ashes, our dest citizens brutally murdered in the streets, and riot and mob violence ruled the Itis but justice to remark that our worthy Sheriff done all in his power to protect the pris- oner. He attempted in an early part of the evening to remove him to an adjoining cvunty, but pickets had been placed on ¢very road lead- ing from the town to prevent hisescape. A posse comitetus was then summoned to protect the prisoner, but was overpowergd by numbers, and nothing could be done but submit to mob violence. Our citizens do not endorse the act, and the whole moral sentiment of our people condemn it in the strongest terms. The proceedings were wound up by giving three cheers for Stonewall Jackson. HOW THE FRENCH ECONOMIZE. ‘There are few American families who know exactly the expenses of a year: they all know probably thut it costs about so many hundred or thousand dollars on the whole. Butevery European family knows the expense of every year,of every month, day or hour—the exact cost of every dinner, supper or breakfast, of every morsel they eat, of every drop they drink. Every German and nch ewife knows not only how much the meat, potatoes and bread of any meal have cost, but the water in which she has cooked them, and the coal or wood she has burned to boil the water. It is infinitely amusing toan American to observe such a menage. im Paris there is no aqueduct, the fountains. of the city belong to the government, and the water is sold by barrel< and pails full to water carrier, who supply families at somucha | gallon. In 2 house of five stories there are two families on each floor, ten who ascend the same staircase, up which all articles for family us+ must be carried. It is a ruie that water, coal and all heavy articles must be taken up before noon, and about that time the eonci*rge cleans the hall and stairs, and they must be kept clean for callers in the afternoon. In every kitchen is a receptacle for water, eon- sisting of an oblong box, containing two or more pailsful, according to the means of tne family or their ideas of cleanliness. In one corner of the box is a small portion of porous atope, which serves as a filter, and to which is a separate faucet. The porteur brings twolarze pails full of water for three cents, and comes every morning. It is therefore yery easy to known how much the water costs in which the dinner is boiled In the same kitchen is a box for coal, which contains the quantity for which they pay forty eents, and they know exactly hew many meals can be cooked with this quantity. If they have guests to dinner, they use an extra quantity of ‘water and coal, and know how many.cents worth are devoted to each guest, and then of evurse they know if they can attord to invite anybody a know exaculy how guch of every ar- ticle is used every day. The streets of Pans ure lined withsmall groceries, where every- thing is purchased by the cent’s worth, and are eertainly very convenient for people who earn only a few cents perday. If a family comes | into the neighborhood who does not patronize | these small shop-keepers, it is considered a great injustice, and we have known them to commence a regular persecution of such a family, annoying them in every possible way. They keep coffer, burnt and ground, sugar, powdered and in lumps, tobacco, liquors, and every household article, intinitely small quantities. The morning meal in every French family o bread and coilre, what they call cafe au iait, and is made of equal portions of coffee and chickory placed jn 4 bigzin, upon which hot ‘watr is poured so long as it runs through Diack. Of this they take two spoonsfuls te a eae a of boiling milk. Three or five cents we of coffee is purchased every day. and the milkman and baker of course come every morning. The second meal is at noon, though it is called breakfast, and is merely a luncheon, cold, or the remnants of yesterday’s dinner. For these two no cloth is put upon the table, and all cere- mony is unnecessary. ‘The dinner is at six. and consists of meat and one vegetable, and something a salad. [ have seen & piece Of Meat, cooked without onivus and garlic, and swimming in gravy. The salad is dressed with oil and vinegar, the role being & spoonful of vinearand three of oil, with pep- per, salt and mustard, and alsoa little onion and garlic. The commencement of dinner is of course soup, as this 1s invaluaple in every con- tinental fomily. There are also soup shops, where a pingor a quart can be porchased every day, between four and six. But as often as ce or twice a week they have a boiled dinner what they call pot au feu. In America the liquor in which meat and vegeiables are boiled Jer suck a dinner are thrown away. It must certainly contain the best juice of the meat, und be very good and nourishing. In Europe it is every dropsavedandeaten. They fillan earth. en pot with meat and vegetables, never omit- ting the onions, and letit boil away one-half. For the soup, they season it with pepper, and sometimes with sorrel, parsley aud other herbs and spices, and thicken it with vermicelli or crumbs of bread. Whether it is delicious or not, it certainly seems too good to throw away. American housewiver, who may be obdlized to practice economy, can at least try it. Childre: may be taught to like it, and must not be told it & an institution ef economy m rely. ‘The dessert ix almost invariably bread and cheese in winter, with alittle comfture. Ido Tenn to say thatevery family lives in this way, but Ihave been in many, aut seen little 4 mee. One is expected to uke a bit of ehevse about an inch square and & teaspoonful ofcomfture. The little shoo windo vs are also some erage: preserves, which are sold in as wo or ts i aanstins thee, three cenis worth, like se in the same way, a bit a few incl fquare fordinner. The Pepper and «alt on ae exceptions to the three cent rule, lithe three. cornered pape f> being the only re ceptacles for them.
