Se SE THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY: SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Intelligencer notices briefly the « wild theories” which are held by a certain class of newspapers and politicians, as to the methods that michi be adopted for crushing the rebel- lion, even to the overriding of the Constitution, or <uspending it far the time being. All these, argues the Intelligencer, «defy criticism, and are cited only as indices of that passionate vio- lenée which marks the eclipse of rexson, though we may remark that if any such doctrines shouid find « lodgment in the hearts of the American people, it would prove that they had nlrendy passed beyond the stage where self- go¥ernment is compatible at once with Ltberty and order.” \ - The Republicor defends Secretary Chase and his financial policy. . ‘ a ATARY BUDGET. OUR MILITARY BU DISPERSION OF GUERILLAS IN MISSOURI Jackson, TENN., Oct. %.—Major Gea. H.W. Belleck, General-in-Chicf.—The following dis- patch is just received from Brig. Gon. Davis, at Columbus, Ky: The expedition to Clarkson, Mo., thirty-four miles from New Madrid, under command of Capt. Rogers, company K, 2d Tibnois Artillery, has been eminertly success- ful, dispersimg the guerillas, killing ten, and mortally wounding two: capturing Col. Clark in command, Captain and three Lieutenants, three surgeons, thirty-seven men, seventy stand of arms, forty-two herses, thirteen mules, twe wagons, a large quantity of ammunition, burning their barrasks and magazines, and en- tirely breaking up the whole concern. No loss on our side. U.S. Grant, Maj. Gen. . z Sea a “SUCCESSES OF GEN. CURTI3 IN FURTHER SUCCESSES OF The following dispatch has been received at the headquarters of the army: HEADQUARTERS, St. Louis, Oct. 28.—Major General Halleck, Genera!-in- Chief : Col. Boyle reports farther successes in Gen. Davidson's southeast district. Col. Lewis, commanding 23d Iowa, with detachments from his own, and lat, 24th, and 25th Missouri, with a section of Strange’s battery, attacked 1,50 rebels at Put- nam’s Ferry, on the %th, killing seyeral and taking over forty prisonrrs. Our troops be- ' baved well. S. R. Curtis. Major General. TIDBALL’S BATTERY. We learn that Captain Tidball's Light Bat- tery, A, 2d Regular Artillery, is the battery which made so remarkable a march when accompanying General Pleasanton in his attempt to intercept Stuart during the late raid into Maryland. ‘This battery marched fifty miles on one day, fifty the next, and thirty on the next, thus making & march of one hundred and thirty miles within three days. Captain Tidball lost onty one horse on the march. The battery was formerly commanded by Captain (now General) W.F. Barry. It moved frum Minnesota to Kansas; thence, on the ont- break of the rebellion, to Washington: thence, via New York, to Fort Pickens; whence it retorned in time to take part in the first battle of Bull Run. It made the campaign of the Peninsula, and has been throngh the Inte active operations, and it still contains 2 number of the horses which accompanied it on its march from Min- nesota to Kansas in 1559, and which, after so long a service, were able to bear the remarkable march above described. The horses were no better, originally, than those now daily purchased and issued to the army, but they have been, under the strict dis- ' cipline of the regular service, well taken care of; and we commend this battery to all young artillerymen, as 4n example of the benefits ot such discipline and care. FROM McCLELLAN'S ARMY—THE ADVANCE. A gentleman who left Pleasant Valley yes- | terday morning, informs us that all the troops in and about Pleasant Valley moved on Sunday and Monday towards Lovettsville. The ag- vance is general along the entire line, below Ferry. Gen. Sumner's corps remains at the latter point. j THE CASE OF THE “ REGULARS.” Frytey Hosritar, Camp Sprague, October, 1982.— Editor Star: L was much pleased to see, in your paper of the ith inst. an appeal for the | regulars now in hospital, and, being one of | them, I could feel the necessity for such an ap- peal.
