Knowing well the reputation Gen. Kearney left behind him jn the service when resigning his commission in the U.S. Army after the close of the Mex- ican war, we were by no means unprepared tor yest such criticisms from his pen upon his too: ber general officers, one and all, as are em- braced in this letter. We have reason to believe that the following 1} an exact copy of the record upon which Mejor John J. Key was dismissed from the Tt. losry service of the United States: “Execetive Man Washingion, September 1882. Mo jor John J. Xey—Sir: 12m informed that, ‘ answer to the question, « Why was not the velarmy bagged immediately after the battle r Sharpsburg! propounded to you by Major Levi C. Turner. Judze Adyoe:i i You answered, ‘That is not the game. object is that ther army shall get mach vontage of the other; hat both =i: ik field till they are exhausted, when we will tTuske a compromise and save slavery.’ “I shall be very happy if you will, within twenty-four hours from the receipt of this, prove to me by Major Turner that you did not ei her literally or in substance. inake the answer srated. Yours, A. Lixcoty. indorsed as follows :) Copy delivered to Major Key at 10.25 a. m., S ptember 27, 62. Jouy Hay.” “At about 11 o'clock a. m.. Sept. 27, 1-62, Major Key and Major Trruer appear before Major Turner says, As I remember it conversation, was: I asked “ihe question why wedid not bag them after the battle of Scarpsburg? Maior Key's reply was: that was Rot game: that weshould tire the rebels ont and ourselves; that that was the only way the Union could be preserved, we come together fraternally, and slavery be saved.” On cross- examination Major Turner =ays he has fre. quently heard Major Key converse in regardfto ik+ present troubles. and never heard him utter & sentiment unfavorable to the maintenance of ube Union. He has never uttered anything ‘aich he, Major T., would call disloyalty. The particular conversation detailed was a private A. Lrxcoty. [Tndorsed on the above :} «In my view, it is wholly-inadmissible for Any gentleman holding « military commission trom the United States, to utter such sentiments a- Major Key is within proved to have done. ‘Therefore, let Major John J. Key be forthwith dismissed from the military s#rvice af the United States. A. Lixcoty.” The foregoing is the whole record, except the simple order of the dismissal at the War De- purtment. At the interview of Major Key and Disjor Turner with the President, Major Key Ged not attempt to controvert the statement of Major Turner; but simply insisted, and sought to prove, that he was true to the Union. The Substance of the President's reply was that if there was a “game” even among Union men to bave our army not take an adyantage of the ¥ when it could, it was kis object to break at game.
