Ss iat aes BRAVERY OF CRAWFORD’S PENNSYLVANIA RESERVES. GENERAL CRAWFORD WOUNDED.’ [ Neak Suarrsscre, Sept. 18, 1962.—Edilor Mar: You have from other sources received so complete an account of Wednesday's struggle that I can add butiittle; but a short account of what our corps (Crawford's brigade, Pennsy!- yunia Reserves) did may not be. uninteresting to your réaders. After marching and countermarching, - we were placed, after the retirement of General | Banks, under General Sumner. As you know, ‘we arrived in Frederick just after the enemy left, and following him to the mountain, we made a night march of it to report to General McClellan at Middletown. General Crawford Teported, as he was leading and in command of the division, and received orders to take his command to the supportof Sturgis, Sykes, and, Cox, who were on the ridge of the’ Sonth Mountain contesting it with the enemy, and whose troops were exhansted. Crawford moved up into position, and received orders to carry the ridge in the morning, if the enemy contested it. The enemy retreated during the night. Mansfield was placed ia command ¢f the corps, and on we went until, by a long and wearisome night march, we found ourselves just in rear of Hooker on Wednesday morning. Without food, H without sleep, our men were taken into action | on Wednesday, Craw fordé’s brigade, increased by three Pennsylvania regiments, leading, as usual. Mansfield was riding about everywhere in @ most excited state. giving orders and coun- ter orders, but acting with great gallantry. Onward we marched, our men. coming into action in unbroken lines, and pouring a most deadly fire into the enemy. Our new troops behaved most beautifully, charging with the steadiness of old troops. The fire was very severe. Of Crawford's old regiments, Colonel Beal, of the 10th Maine, was wounded and borne from the field. Major Walker, of the same regiment, was also wounded, and many ., ofthe men killed. The 46th Pennsylvania was | ent to pieces. With Captain Louis Livingston, of his staff, General C.led up the 125th Penn- | sylvaniainto action. This regiment rashed in with loud cheers, and charged beyond our own far across the open space and into the very | Limes of the enemy, who charged upon their Yanks. The 12ith, Colonel Halley, lost several | officers and men and their Colonel severely wounded. Colonel Crosdale, 125th Periasyl- | wania, killed. As General Crawford was Jeading up the 125th General Mansfield was carried past, mortally wounded, and a staff officer came up directing General C. to; as- sume charge of the division. He led up the re- giment and then went to arrange about the other | brigade. Then he met Gen. Hooker, who re- quested him to hold a wood near whieh one of. his (Gen. C."s) regimé@nts were at all hazards. But his brigade had driven the enemy through * corn-field and across a ridge they had at- tempted to hold. It had suffered very much, | and fresh troops now appearing, we rested for awhile. Gen. Hooker, when about to order an advance of the wholeline was wounded. A j New Jersey regiment, belonging to Gordon's | brigade, was retiring across the corn-field on our right. In attempting to rally them, Gen. Crawford was shot in the thigh, a ball having gone through his hat: also around shot killed the horsevof one of his orderlies instantly. In- formation was brought to Gen. C. at this mo- ment that Sedgwick also was wounded. It needed every man, and especially every general Officer upon the field, and Crawford remained all day, until his thigh was so stiff and numb | that he could not dismount from his horse | Without assistance. Gen Smith came on the field promptly and handsomely, and leading in his fresh troops, drove back the enemy, who | were advancing on our left center with ashow of success. Ow brigade is almost entirely gone. The regiments carried in-as skeletons only have almost been annihilated, but our new regiments which have already done so well, will, I hope, preserve its reputation. § Footr ox MaLlor Offered a resolution in the Confederate Congress now in session at Richmond, “That the Hon. %. He then toldvan anecdote of an acquaintance of his, who, when he was a young man, resolved, like many others, to Fry. We give the anecdote, as itis pretty pointed: | “So he went oa house where a pr young | ladies and a dozen young gentlemen were as- sembled. It was @ log house, and at night. When they retired, the young man heard, through the thin partition, the young ladies talking about their beaux. One of them said, ‘Ob, as to Thompson. I do love Thompson; he’s such a fool.” (Laughter.) And so,” con- cluded Mr. Foote, “if after this exhibition, the President and his advisers retain Mr. Mallory, hell excuse them on the ground that they ‘do — Mallory, he’s such a fool.” ”— Vicksburg ig. 87 The last monthly returns of the Bank of France show a decrease in the cash on hand of 43,500,000 francs, and in the bills discounted of Over 43,000,000. a Cc SCHNEIDER .
