Pope bad reached the position {% hid been determined it should sesume for the present before the atucnch fortifizations on the south side of the Potomac, tn cur front. Ir thetr march of the day from the immediate vi_ e'nity of Fairfax Court House the enemy of course did their best to hurrass our rear with an occa- sional round of shell, which, however, did no damage. We inay add that there already is a strong fleet of U.S. gun and mortar boats in the river ready for instant action If necessary. Our belief is that the rebel generale will essay to cross the river in the hope of getting supplies and other assistance through n secession rising in Maryland, end thus be enabled to move on Baltimore rather than the Federal Metropolis, which they probably think too well fortified to be attacked. The Enemy Repulsed and Driven from the Field—RK ents Engaged — Stenewall Jacksen Engeged—Further Partisulars of Saturday's Ba From the wounded soidiers who arrived in the train yesterday afternoon, and other sources, we gather the following particulars of the late actions in front: About half-past four o’clock on Monday efter- noon, it was discovered that # cavalry force had made {ts way sround In the rear of Pope’s army, woen it made a dash st Gen Reno's force guard- ing the wagon trains, for the purpose. it ts sup- posed, of capturing the supply train, which con- tstned provisions and ammunition, of which the rebels stand sorely in need. Fortunately, they were diseovered in season, and Kearney’s divi- sion was sent down to drive the rebels beck. He found the rebels in greater force than wae at firat supposed, as he displaved not only cavalry, but srtiliery and infantry. He ordered up rein- forcements. He was soon eupported by the divi sions of Hooker and Banks, when the action became general. The fight lasted about two hours, 2 portion of the time the rain wes pouring down in torrents. He wasa brave and gallant officer, In Saturday’s fight 2 sad and mest unaccourt- able bluader occurred. The 3d Miebiyan went into the battle with 290 men, and came out witb only 143, and more than three-fourths of tbisnum- ber met their fate by the fire of the 20th Indiana regiment, which lapped over thelr rear and poured a galling fire into them while on the ad- vance. The first knowledze which the Michigan boys had of the presence of thecther regiment was the bullvts in the back cf their heads, arma, &e., nearly half the regiment having lapped across them. It 1s said of company K, 24 Wisconsin regi- ment, that out of forty-reven men who went into action on Saturday, only seven reported for duty the next morning, the rest having been either killed, wounded or taken prisoncrs.— Reppdiican Death of Brig.
