THREBOCLOCK P.M THRILLING NEWS FROM THE BATTLE F IELD !! Official Report of General Pope, dated 5 o’clock this morning. A TERRIFIC BATTLE YESTERDAY, LASTING FROM DAYLIGHT UNTIL DARK. THE ENEMY DRIVEN FROM THE FIELD. Our Loss not less than 8,000: that of the Enemy at least twice that. OUR ARMY THE ATTACKING PARTY. The Battle Fought on the Identical Battle Field of Bull Run. THE ENEHY IN FULL RETREAT TO- WARDS THE MOUNTAINS, OUR ARMY MAKE GREAT CAPTURES. Gen. Pope comes up with the Encmy and attacks them again this morning. Heodquarters Fisid ef Battic, Groveton, acar Gainesville, Aug. 30,5a.m. Major General Halleck, Generai-tn-Chirf - We fought a terrific battle here yesterday, with ; the combined forces of the enemy, which lasted with continuous fury from daylight until sfter dark, by which time the enemy was driven from the fleld, which we now occupy. Our troops are too much exhausted yet to push matters, but I skell do so in the course of the morning, as soon as Fitz Jobn Porter’s corps comes up from Ma- esas. ‘The enemy is still in our front, but badly used up. We have lost not less than eight thousand men killed and wounded, and from the appearance of the field, the enemy lost at least two tocne. He stood strictly en the defensive, and evory assault ‘was made by ourselves. Our troops behaved splendidly. The baitle } have beea mcre surprising than such aw was fought on the identical battle-field of Bull Run, which greatly increased the enthusiasm of our men. The news just reaches me from the front that the enemy is retreating towards the mounta!n. 1 go forward at once te see. ‘We have made great captures, but { am not able yet to form an idea oftheirextent. * * * Joun Pops, Major General Commanding. Note by the Editor of the Star : We have pos- sitive information that Pope came up with and attacked the enemy aguim, a few minutes past 9 this morning. Fitz John Porter by that time had probably arrived on the field, from Manassas, seven miles off only. Our impression that the heavieet of the fighting of yesterday was by McDowell and Sigel, in the vicinity of ThoroughiareGap, was perhaps er- ronecus, judging from the above dispatch from General Pope. The only possible line of even temporary re- treat for Jackson, that we can perceive, is over the Warrenton turnpike towards the Rappabun- Rock; a8 McDowell and Sigel are probably be- tween him and Thorcugbfare Gap, throagh which he would be compelled to go if seeking to proceed east. Fitz John Porter’s command, which embraces some of those receutly with Burnside, is very strong, we take it. By to-morrcw morning, as slowly as ke may be moving, Franklin ougkt to be withia supporting distance of Pops with a large force—suificient, with Fitz John Porter’s, t make mince meat of any possible reinforcements fhe enemy may g°l. On the whole, aa we ststed a day or two since, the prospect now is rendered doubly sure that there will soon be few rebels in arme in Vir- ginia. P.S.—At 12.30 p. m. the firing stopped, we learn from parties just down from Fairfax county. We trust the fact means a surrender of the rebels, and do not see how it can mean eught else. The railroad was regularly run this forencon from the town of Werrenton to Bristow. Bo it is already clear thet the only damage remaining to be repaired (to the railroad) is to rebuild the Bull Run and Rappahannock bridges. The former should be completed to-night—the latter may be in four or five days. NURSES AND SURGEONS WANTED. ‘There is pressing need for the services of sur geons and of nurses (males) to attend to the wounded of the great battles recently. We are requested by the War Department to call for such volunteers from this point to repelr at once to Alexandria, prepared to stay near the scene of action for some days at least. On reaching Alexandria they will find at the railroad depot provision made for their prompt transmission to points where their services may be needed. THE SMELL OF BATTLE. Not only was the sound cf the cannonading of the great battle near Centerville, to-day, dis- tinctly heard here, but the smell of the gun- powder was quie perceptible at times when the wind freshened from that quarter. CAPTAIN MUSSER, LATE COMMISSARY IN CHARGE AT CENTERVILLE. The following dispatch will be read with in- terest by bis friends: CENTREVILLE, Aug. 30.—I am here with six hundred and twenty-fcur paroled prisoners. 1 wish to getexchanged and go to duty at onee, if possible. THE FIGHT OF TRE TWELFH PENN- SYLVANIA CAVALRY WITH TAB ENEMY seicanealiiaseiestatn TREACHERY IN THE MATTER OF A ISPATCH. a ALgxanpRia, Aug. 50.—Edstor Star: There seems to have been very much misapprehension in the public mind with reference to the izch Pennsylvania eevalry, Col. Lewis B. Pierce, end the part taken by them tn the late attack upon Bristow, Manaseus, and Fairfax Station. Te earlier newspaper acccusts would bave tt thet they displayed great cowardice, and igucbly sked@addlea when there was nineto pursue To those acquaintel with the fects, mthing conl® Netnie at The contrary is the case, and Instan sonal bravery quite numercus the attack upon Manassss, there were but “v of the cavalry at the pest, and they the sick and dis- abled, who had been left behind in the afier oon march of the regiment towards White P. These, on the first alarm, were rsilied, ard in connectiin with a battery of artillery, m wily arrived, taken into action by Col. Pierce himself, who, though for a week before confined to bei by a8 severe ettack of billous remittent fever, mounted his horse and conducted the defexce, until from extreme exheustion be was compe led toseek un ambulance and be carried from the field. With green horses, + ban2ful of sick men, aac 8 few pieces of artille-y, the Colonel, with bis ac. customed gallantry, held the overwhelming force in check until our own wagon trein and the im- menee train of General Pope, just beyond, could be removed from danger ; when, losing the aril lery for want of support, and baving {t turned upon them, they were forced reluctantly to fell back. While this scene wes being euacte’d at Manassas, the regiment was ba’ overpowering force tu the ne Gainesville, heving been furro enemy. By a determined «ifort they cut their way through this force ; and from therce to Bris- tow, Manassas, and Falrlax Station sud House, their retreat skirmishes—tue wh: every strip of woods seeming t swarm with armed rebels. What at first was deemed a raid of a hundred or two guerilla cavalry bus sluce proved to be many theusands of the flower end pride of the Rebel ermy, commanded by their best and most energeti~ officers. The perty for hours resisted and befied has since called forth the united energies of Generals McCie.lan a: Pope to subdue tnd scatter. When the real bis- tory of this midnight atteck is known, we fcel convinced that the gallant officers and men of the Twelfth will receive their due share of commen- dation, and the noble State from which they bail feel that her sons have noi been dishonored or her glory tarnished. The wite of Sergeant Mejor Hollis, and also that of Quartermaster Setgeant Coburn, bravely remained with Drs Laschelle and Bowes, im the hospital, to care for and administer to the ‘wounded who might be brouglt in, prefering to trust rebel honor rather than permit our fallen comrades to lack all necesssry care fcr their com- fort. I will only add that a copy of the dispatch from Brig. General Sturgis, ordering Col. Pierce to march with bis whole force from Manssses fcr White Plains, dated 12 o'clock, Augusi 26, we tsken fiom the person of a captured rebel during the same evening and ia the course of the attack, while the crly dispatch was supposed to be tn the bands of the Colonel, thus Ind.esting that the enemy were wei] advised of all movements, and ries of disposed of their large force so as to secure the capture or annihiletion cf the eatire force guard- Ing the points alresdy named H. +e LATEST BY TELEGRAPH. eee NEW YOXKK STOCK MARKET.
