CONOVER. { rises hess ioeransnsseinstis nhl SECOND EDITION. THRER 0 CLOCE P. M. THE SITOATION. This afternoon we have reason to belive that siready the great bulk of the rebel force that reached the Rappahannock on Wednesday and Thursday last, is already far on ite way back to Gordonsville! Yesterday we mentioned the fact that a large body of rebel artillery (sufficient for an aggregate force from 20,000 to 25,000 strong) was certainly on the merch from the Upper Rappshannock, on Friday last, back im the direction of Little Washington. From that point one fine turnpike leads to Luray, in the Valley, and another to Gordonevilie, via Sperryville and Madison Court Houre The fact that no information has yet reached Bere showing that any rebel force hed tuis receding force was to Sperryville, and thence In the direction of Gordonsville. Since Satarday last nearly all firing across the Rappahannock basceased. Hardly dozenshots adsy are being fred, and now most of our< filcers in front believe that on Sunday last Lee, Long- strect, Jackson &c, quietly ‘‘toek the back track:’’ going somewhere—no one knows whither. “ Ten to one’’ to Gordonsville, we think. The signs yesterday were, that but a very small rebel force was in our frent—hardly enough to keep up the appearance of an opposing force there. We have further interesting information of the rebel army. On Thursduy last there was an an- imated discussion among the members of Lee's staff to settle the question where the blame should rest for being outgeneraled by Pope. It seems that Lee and Jackson certainly ex- Pected their army to be on Sunday morning, the 7th, precisely where it arrived on Tuesday morn- ing, the 19h! Somebody gave a wrong order or somebody did not promptly act upon a right order- However, the loss of the two intervening days utterly defeated the purpose of their forward movement. On Thursday last it was conceded in Lee’s tallitary family that the mcvement bad been a dead failure: Pope being found in position on the north side of the Rappahannock, instead of being caught upon the bank of the Rapidan, ag designed. The entire force that marched east from Gor- donsville was about 80,000 men—not more. Apropos:—Our loss in the skirmishing of Thursday, Friday and Saturday last, on the Rap- pabannock, was astonishingly emall: perhaps not more than 150 in killed and wounded, instead of j 250, as we thought yesterday. Requests have come hither for the preparation of buildings to hold perhaps a thousand prison- ers, taken by Pope’s army so far. They are un- derstood to be 900 taken by Sigel on Saturday, at . Weterloo (3 ford a short distance above Warren- ton Springs), when, after allowing a small brig- ade of the enemy to cross the river, he opened his batteries aad closed in his infantry so upon it as that not a man escaped ; the whole being either killed, wounded, or taken prisoners. The other prisoners are understood to be 140 of Fitzhugh Lee’s mareuding band that attacked the train at Catlett’s on Friday night. We hear that Gen. Pope dispatched a pui force after Lee before daybreak va Sat: y, and thet a por- tion of that force—the First Pennsylvania and Se- cond New York cavalry—came up with L. in time to retake most of our men ke had as prison- “ers, two pieces of artfliery of ourspebad appro- priated a little below Catlett’s, tw. re from ourside, and one hundred and forty rebel troopers It is conceded to day that Lee (Fitzhugh) teck either Lieut. Col. Fred Myers (McDowell’s chief quartermaster) or Col. George D. Ruggtes, Pope’s chief of staf.-They are amazingly alike of a dark night—raddy faced, with bright red heads, whiskers and moustache’, and about the same size and ‘(build.”’ Lieut olgMyers was properly by the side of his train, while, according to the wagonmaster of Gen. Pope’s staff train, Col. Ruggles had ridden to it te give some necessary directions with reference to its movements, and ‘was madea prisoner when within five feet of him—the wagonmaster aforesaid. The guard to Gen Pope’s ataff train is much blamed for the affair of Friday night. They were completely surprised—with their loaded muskets in the ‘wagons ins:ead of im their hands. RELEASE OF PRISONERS IN THE OLD CAPITOL. Last evening, Major Doster, Provost Marshal, and Major Sherburne, of @en. Wadsworth’s staff, examined the prisoners confined in the O!d Capitol, and administered the cath of allegiance to Sifty of them—21 State, and 29 prisoners of ‘war, who were this morning receiving their cer- tificates prior to being discharged The follow- ing are the State prisoners: Williem A. Bagley, Austin Daliman, Geo. C. Powell, Enoch Lowe, Norvi:le Wilson, Wm. A. Sowell, John Murray, James Motherhead, Robert Kelly, Septimus Brown, Simon M. Pates, Henry Church, Wm. Dandridge, Geo. 8. McKenney, Downing Hou- asnd, Sam’ T. Gregory, Lewis T Dawson, Rebt. Dameron, Thos. K. Pruess, Wm. Norris, James Mowbray. The most of these will be recognized as having been captured by the flotilla on the Potomac, while they were crossipg the river ‘with contraband goods, &c. The prisoners of war (released Confederate soldiers taken in various bagtles) are mostly for- eigners, there being but three or four Virginians mong them, the balance belpg Irisb, English, French, Gerroan, Spanish, ené ope Mexican. ‘This morning some 15 convalescent rebel pri- soners from Qlisfburne hospital, were sent to the Old Capital. REBEL PRISONERS ARRIVED. Captain L. ©. Kinser, of the Provost Guard o General Banks’s army corps, arrived here tif morning, baving in charge 29 Confederate prison. ers, who were captured at the battle of Slaugh- ter’s mountain. Capt. Kinser left Warrenton yes_ terday evening at 5 o’clock. The artillery firing, which during the two or three days previous was very heavy, had almost ceased, and when Capt K. left had become very light. The Rebels, from this fact, are supposed to be retreating. It is ru- mored, and very currently believed, that the right wing of the Federal army has advanced. RETURNED.
