LATE FROM THE SOUTH. ir ii mg en RICHMOND. be Richmon: th, of Saturday, 2d inst says we have “lost eighty thousand atom since McClellan landed in Virginia.” It bases its cal- culations on the exaggerations of the Hon Mr. Chandler, ia bis late apeech against Gen. McClel- lan. There is “ata and comfort” for you. It also intimates that ‘‘we (the Rebels) are on the eve of greet events,” and grows frenzied with the idea thet the South Is not fully awake to the fact that “the fate of future generations trembles in the balance.” Among its alarming facts !s one imme iateiy concerning all Southern soldiers. viz., thet “whisky that used to be dear at 25-. per gallon, ts now selling at $10 to $14 per gallon.” Levenger, ‘The Olid fominion’s drunken Governor, has left the-eapital for Wytheville. to look after the rebel troops of the State line. He threatens to demand f:om the confederate government all “ Virginia traitors,’’ so that be can bring them to speedy and condign punishment. REBEL OPINION OF GENERAL POPE. The Richmond En er calls General Foue the “prince of liars, id adds.‘‘that he is only second to Halleck tn the art of lying, and is one Of the greatest blackguards in the Yankee army ” FROM THE RAPPARANNOCK. The Richmond Dispatch says: From the posi- tion of affstrs on the Rappahannock the impres- sion prevails that active tions cannet be long yed. THE PEDERAL FLERT IN JAMES RIVER. ‘The Petersburg Express learns from gentlemen ‘who made observations from Coggin’s Point last Wednesday, that the Federal fleet then comprised 150 vessels, among which the names of the Van- derbilt, tue Metamora, and ten other large steam- ers were legible by thealdofatelescope. Durin, Wednesday four large transports, loaded wi troops, came up the river. The number of tents at Berkeivy seemed less than on the week before. This may have been owing toa removal to the forests back of Berkeley. Persons in the neigh- borbood think McUleilan’s force has been re- duced, but are not positive on thet int. FROM CULPEPER. It ts thought the enemy hes concentrated his forces at Germanna Mills, on the Rapidan, some eighteen miles west of Fredericksburg, and about twenty miles distant from Orange Court House. From this point the Yankees say they will ad- ‘vanee upon Orange Court-House, and thence to Gordonsville From the Lynchburg Republican we learn that the Yankees have boasted that they will take Gerdonsville by this Saturday night, without Bring 2 gun The [tepublican bes also learned, upon good authority, that a general engagement between ovr forces and the enemy was expected to take place yesterday FROM ROCKINGHAM We have heretofore mentioned that on Thurs- day and Friday of last week, there was consider- able excitementin Staznton on account of the unpleasant proximity of the enemy, who was Feported to be only twenty miles distant, though at that writing we were unableto sayin what direction he was ae to be. This question bas been solved by the Rockingham Argister of yesterday From this paper we learn that on bursday, the 24th ult.,a Yankee cava force of twelve hundred men, comiog from Madison county, anc_entering the mountain at what is xnown 23 Turkey Ridge, in Greene county, dsshed In Rockingham throagh the Swift R: Gap. Their history ts not devoid of tnter- est. Several years ago the leading slaveholders of Fauquier county, Virginia, organized a secret pol association, under the title of ‘ Black Florsemen.”? The Biack Horse was regarded as a symbol of the negro race; and no one was ad- mitted to membersbip who was not a elave owner. Warrenton was the place of meeting; and, like the-Knight of the Golden Circle, sc.et pass-words and signs were employed to apprise the inttlated of the presence of brethren. They were bound by the obligation of mutual aid in defense of thetr association, and of ‘‘Southern Rights” generally. They controlled the poiiti- cal matters of that section of Virginia, and no person who did not subecribe to their copstitution and principles could be elected to office ‘The ri of John Brown was the signal for them to assume a military character. They ap- peared in force, and were found te re nt the whole district of country. They were brought cut to defend Harper’s Ferry and assist at the execution of Brown and his coadjutors.
