Brodhead, of the First Michi- gan Cavalry, is owr Ashby, and has made one of the most dashing and daring reconno!ssances of the war. He wasordered on Saturday from Cul- peper Court House in command of his regiment and the Fifth New York Cavalry, to the Rapidan ford, and to hold it till reinforced that evening by Gen. Hatch. He made the march in a driving tain and bivouacked on tue farm of the rebel Col. Tatiaferro; but Gen. Hatch found the roads impassable for bis train, and returned, sending word to Col. Brodhead to push on to Orange Court House and ec~.py that place, end that he would be there thatevening In the morning the river had swollen ¢o that there was no ford; but Col. Brodbead » am the stream with bis command, a feat never performed before, and which the inhabitants said was impossible in such arapid current, aod pushed onto Orange Court House Finding it occupied by rebel cav- alry, he ordered a charge through the town, which was made with a hurra,in a blind! rain under a scattering fire from the roads and railroad track, and the enemy fied. Pickets were pushed out immediately to within three miles of Gordonsville, and on the road to Madison Court House, to await Gen. Hatch’s ar- rival. The enemy sent forces by rail from Gor- donsville to drive in the pickets, which were reinforced; but the picket towards Madison Court House was driven in, and brought word that the enemy were In force in that direction, and had encamped between Coi. Brodhead and Gen. Haten’s troops, so that the former waeapparently cutei. The Colonel then tried a ruse upon the enemy. He reinforced bis pickets towards Gor- dousviile with nearly his entire force, and ad- vanced them atili further. That imy them with the idea of a large force, and they sent for reinforcements. Our troops heard the .cars go. ard then moved beifa mie still farther up and tore up the raflroad treck, and in the pitsb dark- ness, two Lours afer midnight, Col. Brodbecd eolled in bis gallant fellows sad feil back on the Rapidan, bis only chance being to place that river between bis command and the enemy under Ewell. He reached the river and swam it with- ont losing a man. As s00u a8 the enemy learned he was gone, they posted ou their infantry in masses, supposing they would certainly catch Lim at the river; but the bird had flown Our boys came to the edge of the siream, fired off al the enemy some of the carbines that got been soaked in crossing, and then coolly camped in their sight, to their astonishment and wrath. Six of our wen were wounded, but ali Were brought eff safely, The Teturn of the commend was as if they had risen from the grave; for an old scout that General Halb sent asa messenger to Colonel Brodhead, returned sayl2g As cowid et cross the rever, an that Colonel Broaurad was a ‘‘goner.”” He was, indeed, in a tight pixee—the Capi Bese reed strong in front, with a large force on both flanks, and @ swollen river in bis rear; but the audacity of his advauce on Gordenaviile, instead of falling back in the first place, saved him. ——- + POSTAGE STAMPS FOR CURRENCY.
