M Stanton, Secretary of War:— ‘The cavalry expedition I directed Gen King to send out on the 19th, has returned. They left Fredericksburg at 7 p.m. on the 19th, and after # forced marck during the night, made a descent at daylight in the morning upon the Virginia Central Ratlroad at Beaver Dam Creek, twenty- five miles west of Hanover Junction and thirty- five miles from Richmond. They destroyed the railroad and telegraph line fer several miles, burned up the depot, which contained forty thousand rounds of musket ammunition, one bundred barrels of flour, and much valuable property, and brought in & captain in charge, prisoner. The whole country around was thrown into a great state of alarm. One private was wounded on our side The cavalry marched eighty miles In thirty hours. The affair was most successful, and reflects high credit upon the commanding officer and his troops. They are regarded by the Confederate Government simply as citizens, and areconfined in the Libby tobacco factory— now used as a prison for the sick and wounded, the surgeons and civilians. They are well, but occupying as they do, a room with hundreds of sick and wounded lying with them on the same floor, without cots or beds, and on short rations (two meals per day) of bread and meat, express themselv s as decidedly uncomfortable : Ralph C. It affords us much plessure to be able to say that the President’s call for 300,000 additional troops is being responded to with far more prompt- itude than is generally comprehended. Alreedy more than thirty thousand of the men have been enlisted, though the exertions being made to get these troops may be said to have just fairly com- menced. The probability now is that they will all be in the field very much sooner than the public bas anticipated for some days past.
