So AN IMPORTANT CONSULTATION. Oa Saturday last, at the request of the President, ‘he Senatorsand Representatives of the border slaveholding States met him, to hear read a paper of great public importance he had taken occasion *e prepare. It is understood to have smounted ‘oan appeal to them to take open and avowed position in favor of the prompt initiation by their respective States, of the policy of prospective fadual emancipation and colonization with pe- vuniary aid from the General Governmer.. We have reason to believe that In enforcing on their minds the propriety of such actin on their part, the President dwelt with great, and just, earnest- hess on the influence it conld not fail to exert in repressing the spread ¢7 abolitien ultraism at the North, that has v:deniably assumed fearful pro- portions through the prolongation of the rebe!- lion. The reading of the paper, which Is said to ave Leen replete with the kindest sentiments, was listemed to with great attention by all, and with restprocal cordiality on the part of most present. Subsequently, the gentlemen thus addressed, as- semnbled for consultation upon the subject, and *ppointed a committee of seven to frame a reply to the President's address, to be subinitted to 4hem for amendment and adoption at an adjourned meeting. We bear that among the committee are Messrs. Wickliffe of Ky., Noell of Mo , Cristield of Md., Pisher of Del., Carlile of Va, and Mal- jory of Ky. The name of the other committee- man we bave not learned. We hesitated to mention this interview on Sat- urday last, seeing (from wnat we had inciden- tally learned of it) that it was designed to be re- warded entirely a private one. As the fact that it was held, with what we believe to be somewhat erroneous accounts of it, are published In the morning papers, we do not feel at liberty longer to delay making this statement with reference to It. Tue Pemeo cr ExiistMents.—The change in bhatt sacs of eniistments of the new quota, from ‘hrée Years to one year, bas been agreed upon by the President and Secretary of War. We find the above in the Philadelphia and Baltimore papers of this morning. The announce- ment Is premature, as the matter is yet being cen- sidered, and ts not fully determined upen. Con- xress will act upon the matter to-day, and !t ix not Improbable bu: that they may pase a lew vbenging the period of enlistment. ——cquwuwWwWu Tus Scaxciry oF Sraciz.—There seems to be ne doubt that Congress, before the close vf the scasion, will provide for the scarcity of specie by authorizing the issue of » etrs of the denomination of two and a half devmrs, end otherwise meeting the necessity of <ne times, which legislation may delay the #.:journment beyond Wednesday. UCeLLactors or Taxes.—Applications for the vffice of collectors of taxes in the various Con- nds, and the number is rapidly increasing. Ths applications are addressed to the Secretary o! the ‘freasury, and require the dally labor of many clerks to assort and endorse them. ee UD The projet of a treaty with Mexico, pro- ¥ ding for the loan of eleven millions of doliars t) the Republic, was discussed in the Senate on Sa‘urdsy lest, and then laid on the table.
