THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY..............JUNE 25, 1562, Spirit of the Morning Press. The Intelligencer argues that while the rebel- Hon may be substantially quelled in a few months or weeks by Its power to make great military movements being broken up, yet ‘‘ the war could come to an abrupt termination only bya universal «let rmination on the part of the insurgents to rom the contest, or by a sudden conviction ¢ part cf the Government that it bad under- taken a task beyond its power.’ The latter alter- vative, the Intelligencer thinks, is becoming less cod less probable, in view of what has already been accomplished. The Kepwolicon is unbappy because the Star Quotes the opinions of Maryland papers, in pre- ference to its own, as exponents cf public senti- ment in that State. ————— +208 OUR MILITARY BUDGET. pegs A A MISCHIEVOUS CANARD. Last night the town was considerably excited by & mischievous rumor to the effect that there nad been heavy fighting on the Peninsula, and that McClellan had met with a bad reverse. Such, rumors bave usually been put in circulation by Secesh, but the present one was traced to an em- ployee at the Capitol, who stated it on the au- thority of Members of Congress. There was not ” word of truth in the story, and it seems to have been act afloat in a spirit of revenge by some of ‘he junketing marplots who were so deservedly set to the right about by Gen. McClellan, on their endeavor to penetrate to his from: on their late visit to the Peninsula. NAVY YARD. This morning « detachment of marines were sent to Portsmouth, N. Several families about six mises from this Place have the small pox. No one from that neigh- borhood Is allowed to visit the camps. Many mer- chants and traders from those arein the city, renting houses and preparing for business in earnest. There was a perfect rush yesterday at the Pro- vost Marshal's office to take the oath. There were just four hundred and ten, by account, who took the oath. So anxious were some to get in and take ft, before the departure of the up river bound boats, that they jumped over the fron rail- ing to get in. McCLELLAN'S ARMY. Everything Ready for the-Greet Struggle [From Editorial Correspondence N.Y. Times.) June 20, P. M.—The rebels have been busy ali day shelling our batteries and camps across the Chickahominy, near New Bridge. This brid; is yet unfinisbed—the rebels commanding the west side of it, while we hold the other. [t crosses the river just ieee some of their beav. iest batteries, and thus mes a tm; nt work. Aswe have not needed it hitherto, we have been Inno haste to finish it Butes the time draws near when they apprehend 2 forward movement, the rebels become more and more de- termined that we shall not compiets it. They com- menced throw! shells this morning from two batteries, one at Price’s house, and the other half a mule further up, at about 9 o’clock and con- tinued ft until2. As soon as the firing began to be brisk, 1 rode over to the opposite side and witnessed the effect, and tried to conjecture the object of this demonstration. They seemed to be trying to stir up two or three of our batteries. Some of their shells feil within balf a mile of them, and some went half over everything that they wished to hit. But not one of our guns re. Plied—nobody was hurt—and soon after 9 the rebels gave it up in disgust. On our side everything bas been perfectly quiet. I met three of four of our companies of engineers going out with axes and spades to construct two or three small corduroy es for artillery, and atone or two points saw men at work com- pleting breastworks But all our Preparations are substantially do And if there is any further delay it will be due to scme othercause than that which bas done duty thus far, that we were “not quite ready’? . If the obstruct!~z 5, including Fort Darling, can So removed as to permit the passage of our ‘Snboats up the river, the surrender of Richmond becomes a question of hoursonly. Considering McClellan’s well-known inclination to save life —his utter abnegation of himseif in his desire to serve the cause—his rather inexplicable delays here for the last few days, and other circumstances to which I have referred, 1 am half inclined to s t that he means to a jpea a direct at- as Fea he hears the echo of the guna of Fort arling. For Two or three days now the rebels have made a deuce of a row with thedrum morn- ing. Ata very early hour wecan hear tattoo in their camp, with fhe words of command, &c If they intend to attack us, they would not thus give us notice. If they intend to evacuate, Le f would cloak their design with precisely’ suc demonstrations. Their ostentatious firing to-aay reminds one very much of the simtlar perform- ance the day before they left Yorktown. Gen. McClellan on Wednesday said he had lain awake all the morning listening to their tattoo, »nd won- dering whether it did not mean ‘‘ekedadd!e.”” A letter written by a Mr. Thomas Robinson, and dated Richmond, June 13, and addressed to bis wife, by some means f-ll into Federal hands. The letter saystoat “both armies are entrenching.” This istrue. The rebels have put up some very formidable earthworks during the last three weeks; and our side has at least kept paceswith them ‘hey dig to prevent our advance. We dig to make sure that, if checked, we need not retreat I donot think that this proceeding war- rants Mr. Robinson's inference that there will be no fighting for some time. There may not be, and then again theremay. When there is any it will be severe; and on our part will be mainly a battle of artillery. e Affairs at headquarters are perfectly qaiet. Gen. McClellan, who bad been quite ill, 1s now recovered and in rfect health. Gen. Barry, chief of artillery, who bas been anxious about the weather, Is perfectly satisfied with the existing state of things. He loods asif Ais part of the preparatory work has been done. All that been said In. reference to the non- occupation of the White House as a hospital is very stupid, very malicious, and very contempti- ble. The story of an arrangement between the two Generals “een to protect each otaers roperty is a sheer Tabricktion. The Waite ouse bas but six rooms,—and would hold at the outside, not more than fifty patients. It is at some distance from the landing piace, and in the judgment of Dr. Tripler, tue Medi al Director, is not needed for hospital purposes, as tents have been provided for the temporary care of the wounded at the landing 3* ts guarded from In trusion and injury partly because the orders of the army are to protect private property, and partly because it is the site OY Washington’s early home,—both in my judgment, perfect! just and conclusive reasons. “thy well is guarde solely to prevent its being exhausted by over- drafts; the water is used by the soldiers con- stantly, although excellent water is abundant and mucb moreaccessible. I trust the White House will contioue to be protected from invasion and injury. Itisavery small price to pay out of re- spect to the memory cf Washington. There are twenty houses better adapted to hospital purposes than the White House,—and every one of them is untouched. The letter of Mr. Thomas Robinson, referred to above, among other things, says: You have no idea of the destruction of Property, and the scarcity of everything. It is with great difficulty clothing can be obtained for our sol- diers now, and it is getting worse every day, and I expect we shall need even ottr bed clothing to clothe ourselves and our negroes. You speak of wishing to get to Richmond. Let me advise you not to come. Friends that were glad to see you before would not be now. It is near upon starvation here with every one. Board 83 50 per day, and nothing to eat atthat. Mr. Dadley was kind enough to give me a room at the depot, and he and I, and four or five others, are messing and doing our own marketing and cooking. I will give yous sample of what we ay for what we eat:—Bacon, 50 cents per pound; Pedrand lamb, do ; coffee, $1 50 per pound; = “s Gucent?; greens, 50 cent per head; bread 10 cents per loaf; molasses, $4 per gallon. Both armies are entrenching themselves around this place, and 1 do not thinka fight will take place for some time. sneer By WALL & BARNARD. Auctioneers.
