P lu An Iupnovemant Inparn.—Tucksy’s Undula- ting Spring Bottom.—There is now to be seen at be, in many respects, the most valuable invention of the age—namely, Pe sony Sy angen bed, which approaches as near perfection in the great requisites of comfort, coolness and cheapness, as we can well conceive possible. The originator of this improvement is a yong man named Tucker, of remarkable inventive genius, and who has made the creation of a perfect spring bottom, combi- ning elasticity, ‘th and cheapness, the stud of yesrs. The » light and elegant, manufactured of the best English wrought tron; is strong, securely jointed, and effords not the slightest chance for theledgment of vermin The siats for the bottom are of the best Massachusetts spruce, running longitudinally, and the lk is so perfect that, though ylelding with ready elasticity to the shape of the human fizure, will yet sustain an enormous pressure; and we have seen & man of 237 pound weight stand upon these slats, springing them with bis entire weight, without damaging them in the least. By an ad- ditional invention of great ingenuity, in theshape of extension pins of copper wire, these siats can not only be moved at will, but their elasticity is further increased insuch sort that a thin cotton mattre-s of half the gsual size answers the pss: Pose of two large mxttresses on the ordi nai ; causing a ‘wonderful siving In the article of bed- ding alone, to say no‘hing of the cheapness of the bedstead itself, which is sold at a price almost f:bulously low, although surpassing the most ex- jive spring-bottom bed incomfort The bed 3 surmoun' by a light and graceful canopy to support a musquito net ; and, wonderful to say, tbe whole concern—bedstead, spring bottom, can- opy and all—can be folded into a space not thicker than an inch plank ! Surgeon General Hammond, who has humanely given his attention to any possible amelioration of the condition of the sick and wounded sol- diers, has signified his warm approval of this bed, ard has ordered large numbers cf them for Government hospitals. We bave tried one of them, with great satisfac- tion, and believe that it must certainly displace all other beds in use. Our enterprising neighbors McGuire & Co. have procured entire control of the sale of these beds for this District, Owects ror Cuanity —This morning, two little boys, the one six and the other nine years of age, very intelligent, but in a ragged and dirty condition. were picked up by a gentleman from adung heap, in which they had made a hole to sleep last night. The older one can read a little, and says that they are orphans, and were sent to this city by their aunt to be cared for by their uocle, whs works at the nivy-yard. But thelr uocle abused them, and drove them away; and the older one showed scratches and m1rks on his face, which he says were infilcted by his unfeel- ing relative. They were kindly taken into the house of Mrs. Semple, No. 509 Tenth street, until some ene might employ them, where they re- ceited a breakfast, the first meal they had eaten in twenty-four hours. They are both anxious to be en and the older one especiaily. Any mm who desires to take and apart d care for hose poor orphans can see them by calling at 509 Tenth strect, near C. The Provost Marshal wee taformed that said house was one of prostitution, and ordered Lieut. North to arrest all he found therein, and also to destroy all spirituous liquor be might find. Mrs. Welsh and two other women, inmates of the establishment, together with three children, were arrested and treated to a ride to tbe Central Guardbouse. The guard found a quavtity of ‘ blue-streaxed -Jersey-lightning”’ waisky, which they poured into the gutter. Canc or Fatsz Imraisonment —Joseph H Bradley, Eeq., has brought suit against General Wadsworth, Military Governor of the District of Columbia, for false imprisonment. Tax Wrirs —Yesterday, a colored backman Edmonson was arrested for severely lash- ing two small colored boys in front of Willard’s Hotel. The act was witnessed by several gentle- men, whoappesred against him, and he was fined by Justice Clark according to law. The boys are very annoying in that locality, and their conduct requires the especial attention of the police. But the hackmen who tske the law in their own hands lay themselves liable to a criminal prose- cution, as well as to fine and eosts under the Cor- Poration law. The Monarch came in gallantly. Some of the Officers of the Lancaster, which now held the next place in the line became excited and con- fused; but the engineers behaved well. The pilot erred in signals, and backed the boat ashore and disabled her rudder. Switzerland construed the general signal order to keep half a mile in the rear of the Lancaster to mean that he was to keep half a mile behind her in the engagement; and therefore failed to par- ticipate. Hence the whole brunt of the fight fel upon the Queen and Monarch. Had either the Lancaster or the Switzerland followed me as the Monarch did, the rebel gun- boat Van Dorn would not have escaped, and my fiag-ship would not have been disabled. Three of the rebel rams and gunboats which were struck by my two rams sunk outright and were lost. Another called the General Price was but slightly injured, and Iam now raising ber, and purpose sending her to my fleet.
