BY MARY KYLE DALLAS. I nt a portion of last year at Slammer- ville, a village situated in the western portion of these United, or rather dis-United States. e no intention of indicating the exact lo- cality of the town, and when [ call it Slam- merville, I beg to state that the name is not the preper one. Siammerrville is not put down on any map; it does not even figure on those ebarta where cities yet berg es — not See ee ee eee , are mar! with careful accuracy for the temptation of unwary purchasers of real estate. Slammer- ville is the alias, so to speak, of a very res- pectable, thriving village, somewhere in the west, duly baptised, long since, by the name of one of our first Presidents—no matter which. Respectable as it is, however, I believe that I should never have heard of the place had it not been that the Brown family, consisting of Brown pere, and Brown mere, and the nine Misses Brown, took up their residence within its bosom, and sent thence a letter in- forming me of their location, and calling upon me to fulfil my promise or suffer under their displeasure. Now, the said promise was neither more nor less than that I would visit them as soon as they were “‘settled,’’ and this rocess, the meaning of which every house- eeper understands, having been duly per- formed, they were, unless Miss Miranda Brown indulged in the fabrication of ‘“‘white lies,” expecting me with the utmost impa- tience. “It would be such an excellent time for you to come, my dear Olivia,’’ wrote the young lady, ‘for Mr. Silas Silkskin isin New Yor' —making purchases for his uncle’s store—and will be delighted to be your escort back. He will call upon you witha letter of introduc- tion, and if you don’t come with him, I'll never speak to you again in all my life.” Of course such a threat decided me, and I awaited Mr. Silkskin’s arrival with impa- tience, and had my trunks already pack : when, one evening, some one was heard to Mip violently upon the panels of the front door— an unnecessary exertion, considering the close proximity of the bell—and an excessive- ly graff voice inquired of Biddy— “Say, miss, do you know of anybody by the name of 0-l-i-v-i-a—Olivy L double e—Lee ; Miss Olivy Lee? Do you know of anybody of that name around bere?’’ It was Mr. Silkskin, end he was reading the direction from the back of my friend’s letter of introduction. I was certain of it. And as Biddy ushered him in, (be had accidentally walked into the hall pantry in the first place,) I looked up expecting to see a form which matched the voice—a heavily-built man of about forty-five or fifty, red-faced and double- chinned; an individual naturally associated with the title of Uncle John or Dick, with broad shoulders, fat hands, and a spacious chest. How I was astonished? Mr. Silkskin teen. In hight he could have ack the Giant Killer’s bean- belonged toa baby. He what he oconsidcred a bow, said, “Miss Lee, I s’pose,’’ and poked the let- ter towards me. It was as I supposed; this was Mr. Silkskin. When I turned towards bim once more, this gentleman was sitting on the sofs with his hat on, and with a hand on each knee; bis coat sleeves had climbed his arms, and his panta- toons had climbed his lower limbs in ass this positiou, and there was mure trevkled red wrists and grey worsted stockings than I thought was ornamental. He was overwhelm- ed with confusion when [ addressed him, and nearly chocked himself with a straw which he had been chewing. Recovering from this ac- cident, he entered into conversation ; inform- ing me that be left the Browns “right woll ;’’ that the weather was warm; and tbat Slam- merville would be a “right smart place if they bad 8 little more female society ;** proviine Ty lunged into his pocket and drew forth a lit- Fe note. ‘I almost forgot it,’’ he said, “Mra. We were to start in about a week, and mean- while I busied myself in selecting ‘‘a girt” for Mrs. Brown. Many end many a single Hiber- nian female was willing to ‘‘gu back west,” but by a strange fatslity, nearly ell were fresh, rosy, good-looking young women. I wasin despair, and was about leaving the intelligence office, when the door opened and a temale en- tered. She wag perhaps thirty years of age; her face pitted with the small-pox ; but one eye, and her left shoulder was higher than the other; add to this a head of fiery red hair, and a ridiculous pug nose, and you will not wonder that I cried “Eureka!” “Mrs. Brown may keep her for life if she chooses, = said to myself aud forthwith entered into ne- gotiations with the damsel. .
