Comments In this morning’s Intelligencer, upon the result of yesterday's election here, make it Proper that we should expose the misrepresenta- tions of the real facts involved in it, which it is the Intention of the writer thereof to impress upon the public mind ; the sald writer being, quite evi- dently, no other than the defeated Secesh candi- @ate for Alderman of the Fourth Ward. This played-out ward politician thus endeavors to cre- ate the impression that the result shows that little interest wes felt in the contest; or, in cther words, that the proportion of our fellew-citizens ‘who sympsthize with the enemies of their coun- try now in rebellion, is far larger than it is in Teslity. He seeks to compare the total vote on this ecca- sion—4,£16—with that thrown In the election of 1560—7,007. How deceptive such a comparison is, we instance by polating tothe notorious fact of the importation on that cecasion of thousands cf spurious votes from the water-works aud Bal- timore, in order to sustain the cause this disin- genuous writer and those acting with him Jn our Jocal affairs had at beart. In the election that came off oaly a year after- ‘wards—fora Register and Collector—when the friends of the defeated Fourth Ward secesh patty candidate for Alderman jmported few or no spurl- ous votes to effect its result, the total rote polled ‘Was but 3 090—766 votes Jess than the number received on this occasion by the unconditional Union candidate for Mayor; the vote received bv him yesterday being some hundreds larger than ‘Wwasever before given to any candidate for any position in the municipal government of the Federal Metropolis. Other causes, natural and unnatural, bave broughtsbout the apparent faillug ei of the vote in yesterday's election. Chief aunang the former is the fact that at least six hundred loyal voters of this city are at this time absent in the two District regiments, the Callfornia reyi- ment, and in one or two Pennxylvania regiments, fausatly #zbting in their country’s behalf; while avout balf as many more are away with our armies, serving in the quartermasters’ or com- missary gad sutlers’ departinents On the other hand, there are at least six hun- ed of the ardent sympathieers with the local politics of the defeated Fourth- Ward secesh-party candidate for Alderman, actually serving inthe armies of the rebels; or absent from here, because they prefer to cast their lot with the rebelilon, to living longer under the Stars and Stripes. Every one of these latter, had they been here to vote, would of course have voted against the uncendi- tional Union ticket. Had ell these, of all stripes, remained here to ‘Vote, the total vote polled would doubtless have Bpproached nearly to the enormous vote thrown two years ago by ald of the importation of spart- ous votes to defeat theelection of Mr. Riehard Wallach ou that occasion; the population of ‘Wesbington having increased at least 20,000 souls in the last fifteen months, prinetpally be- tween February and June of last year, and there- fore making a considerable proportion of this in- crease, voters by this time. —<—<$_________ Unio: Meeting: eo and Pertsmouth— The Object of the Knemy’s Attack on Gen, MeCielan’s Left Wing on Saturday. The Std Massanhusetts and 23th New York held the front, and prot the two pieces on the right, but fell back a few rods at the reinforcement of the enemy. . . \ < ‘The position was held until the enemy charged several times upon the gun ind at success- folly, and afterwards until our refnforcements returned from the front, when the 9th Massachu- setts and 17th New York came into the woods on the weet, in the rear of the enemy, and opened fire with such sucerss that we, this morning counted one hundred and seventcen bodies o: rebels on the spot. This was the severest part of the field for the rebels. Counting up as far as possible from all points, there are one hundred and sixty-seven dzad in our easion,.whieh out troops are now engaged to tly burving. The number of wounded in our possession is not large as the killed, es the men who are slightly wounded can walk off, and the wounded fre usually taken to the rear during the en P= ment. But the proportten usually allowed to wounded would give sometive hundred wounded, which would be reasonable. The number of prisoners is increasing every hour. ‘Three hurdret and forty-eight were sent in a body to the Provost Marshal, and there is how some seventy more in our session, and the manner in which the enemy were divided and scattered lo the fight indicates that the num- ber will be still largely increased As nsar as we can ascertain there were two brigades of rebels engaged—one North Carolina and ene Virginia.
