ESAS, THE SITUATION. Up toneon to-day there was no later news In ington from either Union Army than that shed this morning. A dispatch from the t Potomac reached bere last night, saying tbat there were signs that Jackson’s force, instead cf retrenting out of the Valley at double-quick time, still lingered in the vicinity of Charlestown. ‘This cannot possibly be true; as Jackson knows vell that to do so even for forty-eight hours ud inevitably result in the destraction or cap- ture of bis whote force. The fact that little in- formation of his movements after fighting Banks at Winchester has been received here, satisfies us thet be has certainly retraced bis steps almost selyas he came east—the route by which bis movements would be leastexposed to Union observation, and least Mable to interception. Nevertheless, if Fremont has done his duty, he mast to-day be tntercepted in his retreat, at or spout Stanardsville DEAD. Iteut. Col. Naar Mecuanicsvittx, Six Mitgs ra Ricumonp, Monday, May 26.—All along the ri wing, to-day, the rebels have shown themselves in strong force. Deserters and contrabands con- firm the story that Beauregard 1s in Richmond, though none have seen him. The rebels were cheering loudiy over someting all this morning; they are throwing a strong force down to the river, and areagain moving down their army tothe front, as though they meant to give us battle. Three brigades have laid in front of Mechan- fesville all day, threatening an attack, but we still hold it, though our pickets have been driven in along the river. We still hold both sides of the bridges, and can no doubt hold them. A drizzling rain bas been falling all the afternoon, and no movements of the troops has been made that it is advisable to publish. We le now side by side with the large camps, but three miles distant, and though any hour may plunge us into a fight, we do not look for one for some time to come. Gov. Sprague Elected te the U.S Senate. Provipence, May 23.—Gov. Wm. Sprague was to-day elected v. S. Senator for six vears, from the 4th of March, receiving 92 out of 103 votes. Another regiment and battery are expected to leave for Washington to-morrow Norfolk Letter. [Correspondence of the Philadelphia Inquirer.) NorPotx, May 26.—There appears to be an uneasy feeling existing as regards the result of the pending battle. The outposts towards Suffolk are being strengthened. ‘he blockade is more rigidly enforced; as an evidence, the So from Old Point, notwithstanding they had 5 ‘were put under arrest aod marched off to Gen eral Viele, who, after strict examination, found they were loyal, and permitted them depart Rebel soldiers are coming in every day from beyond Suffolk. They take the oath and are glad ofthe opportunity. They represent the Rebels to be in 4 starving condition. One of them stated this morning that, when be deserted, the men were allowed but six ounces of meat and half a pound of bread per ay. There was service in several of the churches yesterday. The prayer of the President in the Episcopal Church was omitted, but a minister of the Methodist congregation happened to he blessed with the idea that there existed in Amer- fea two nations, so he concluded to pray for them both, to ease his conscience. The rebels still hold ont, and refuse to submit and take the oath ofallegiance. For their obsti- nacy Gen. Wool maintains the blockade. If they desire starvation in preference to Yankee notions and the protection the Government offers them, the General has no objection to allowing them time to repent One of the reasons they give for not ylelding to the United St-tes is that in a few days the Con- federate army will re-oceupy Norfolk. You will almost doubt the assertion, but it is true, nevertheless, that nota few of them sup- the Yankees bad horns. Several evidences of theirignorance | have witnessed. By way of illustration I will give two cases : One of the pri- vates of the ist Michigan regiment stopped at the house of a Rebel lady in Portsinouth, for the pur- of getting a drink of water. He was refused. Ete said, ‘* You Yankees have horns;’’ and actu- ally took off the soldier’s cap to geta look at them. Another, not seeing the horn, said, ‘You Yankees must be queer fellows; your horns must drop off wien you come down here’? Between four and five hundred citizens took the osth of allegiance to-day. Deserters from the 6th Virginia regiment are brought in almost hourly. Three to four hundred are reperted es having left. SS Ses Exrsctrp Excuance ov Cox. Col. enh a Shepley; formerly Judge of ‘Sy Maine, and once a Senator from State. Colonel has been a prominent national demo- cratic politician in times past, and was the special friend, adviser and host of Jefferson Davis when he made p visit to New England some few years 0. We learn that W. B. Munford, who is charged with being conspicuous as the leader of the party that before the arrival of Gen. Butler, tore down the Federal flag which wr> hoisted on the Mint by the forces under Capt. Fr cragut, was yesterday arrested by the United States authorities. Mr. Bsnard, who was formerly a clerk of A. J. Guirot, and the officer of the Mint, and Bernard Avegno, one of Mr. Guirot’s securities on the —— the United States, have also been ar- rested. Six large squere rigged vessels arrived yester- = from sea loaded with United States troops. The flag of the consulate of the Netherlands is not flying to-day. The residence of Gen. Twiggsand Col.
