The pees et our command to-day necessarily limits ue explanation we have to make of what has transpired in that quarter in the last few days, itnetsoasto prevent us from being perfectly telligible, we trust. Thus we have to say that the force under Jack- soo, itis evident to us, consists only of the troups which be retreated before Banks, when the advanced as far as Harrisonburg, increased the one or two thousand men that are known oiaed him weeks ago from Gordonsvilie immediate vicinity, and a ccnsiderable pertion of the rebels, who, under Ewell and 1) dward Johnston, fought Schenck and Milroy a week or two ago in tne vicinity of Monterey ‘I ue litter, to the number of four or five thousand, doubtless, slipped away from Fremont’s front, (after the fashion {2 which Joe Johnson's army sipped away from Patterson's front, and joined Beauregard at Manassas, it will be remembered,) snd fermed a junction with Jackson, ere his at- tack on Kenly. In all, we do not believe that Jackson bas more than ten thousand men thus sthered under his command; a force, however, mote than sufficient to annihilate Kenly’s one ‘tougand, as has been doae, and to have defeated 3 (who had with him bot four thousand men —not ten thousand, as the Nepwbiican this morn- tates) at Winchester, had he ventured to at- tempt torematn there Instantly on beating Kenly, Jackson started on the direct road to Winchester, to get in the rear of Banks, who was then at Strasburg. Yester- dey morning be was attacked by Jackson as he was retreating ; but from the fact that he lost no portion cf the supplies, &c., he was covering, it « justly inferable that his battle of the day could Lave been little more than a series of inconsider- able skirmishes between bis rear guard and the rebel advence, that amounted to little of import- ence. Com’dg. —— +0 Distursances In Baltimore, YesTERDAY.— We glean the following particulars from the Baltimore Ameriean : The news of the defeat of the Ist Maryland regiment and the death of Col. Kenly caused a high baer He exasperation, ard this wes in- creased by the open i po. of the disloyal over the defeat and slaughter of a regiment raised among the citizens of Baltimore. The excite- ment was intense and knock downs frequent. A secesh butcher was knocked down on Saturday night, end on Sunday Robert Morrow, Mr. T. J, Warrington, a member of the bar, and Boltvar R. Daniels, of the Baltimore bar, were badly beaten. Mr. Daniels was protected by the police, and when be thaoked them cries of “hang him,” “bang him,” resounded afl around him. The independent Methodist Episcopal Crurch, at the Assembly Rooms, suspended service, because an attack upon them was threatened. Mr. Paesano, residing on High street, near Lombard, was bit by a brick, inflicting a severe wound. A gentle- man named James nox, of the firm of Knox & Co., shipping and commission merchants on Smith’s wharf, while passing along North street, got into a difficulty and was immediately at- tacked by seviral inthe crowd. A proposition was made to heng him near the Chesapenke Bank, but the police rescued him. There was but few fights in the afternoon, and those of little consequence. Shortly after five o’clock, Samuel Hindes, Eeq., one of the police commissioners, mounted a box, near th.2 corner of Calvert and Baltimore streets, and made a spirited address to the crowd, urging those com- Posing it to pay respect to the law by quietly dis- persing to their homes. In compliance with his request the crowd dispersed, and quiet reigned once more on the street. A number of arrests were made during the day. Major General Dix sent for Marshal Van Nos- trand, and asked if bis force wag sufficient to preserve the peace of the city received an answer in the affirmative ured the Mar- shal that such proceedings should not be tolerated in bis department, and that !f necessary he would call out the military. The aspect of the city to- day will determine his decision. Lire insvrance.—Rufi mall, Eaq , of this city, is now stopping at the National Hotel, Washington, where he ts doing a fine business in Ife assurance. Mr. Small has for severe! years st devoted his entire attention to the Insurance uainess, in all its departments. He represents some of the very best companies in the United States. We have ene hed a personal knowledge of his business in this city, and have always known him to be <sf2 and prompt in all business matters. As a consequence he has on his books, in the long list of persons for whom be has pro- cured life iusurance policies, many of our most enterprising business men and close financiers He has also procured policies for persons tn New fngland and the Middle States. We are not surprised that he is succeeding in Washington. All who desire to eff-ct an insur- ance upon their lives may rest assured that in ali things they will find Mr. Smallan honorable and reliable insurance agent —Biddeford (Me.) Jour- nal. We understand that Mr. Small will remain here @ few days longer, and will revisit this elty again within the year witha view to a perma- ent residence here. re eae From Burnetpe’s Commanp.—By an arrival at Old Point we have the following : The American flag was raised in Raleigh, N. C., some three or four days ago by the citi- zens. No particnlars have been received. ‘Tuis news came by a flay of truce. On day before yesterday a party, consisting of two compantes of North Carolina cavalry and one compsny of infantry, visited Swift creek, twelve miles from Newbern, where a Union meeting had recently been held, and arrested several Union men, taking them away with them. One of the men, who was very loud tn his ex- sions of Union sentiments, was taken into fre woods by the enemy, wher? his throat waa cut, and where he was afterwards found by our troo, A reconnoissance was made by Clinton, nine- teen miles south of Newhbern, s few days since, where the enemy’s advance pickets were found and a skirmish ensted. We lost one man killed end four privates taken prisoners. We left nine of the enemy's dead on the te!ld and took two prisoners. The health and spirit of the troops at Newbern coatinne excellent. Whilst the fight was be was rein- i Dircommaeeed ¢ a Padey ey wodag The it on y a strong dash of cavalry, under and of the famous Ashby, on the position ta by Col. Kenly, about a mile east of Shenandoah. Aftera fight of two hours the enemy was repulsed, with heavy loss, and driven back some distance. Finding that a large force of infantry was com- ing to Ashby’s aid, and moving soas to surround him, Colonel Kenly ordered his men to fall back to the west side of the Shenandosh, and to destroy the bridges after them. This was done in good order, and the amaller bridge was destro: but the flanking force of the enemy came on be- fore the longer bridge could be destroyed, and Colonel Kenly im ep | got his guns in posi- tion and his men in line of battle to prevent the crossing of the river. Another fight here took place, which lasted nearly two hours, and the enemy was again repulsed with heavy loss Finding that no reinforcements arrived, Col. Kenly, wounded by a ball in the neck at the first assault, addressed hig men and urged them, al- though assailed by a force at least five times their own number, to keep together to the last ; other- wise they would be run down and slaughtered by the enemy’s cavalry. Then, placi artil- lery in the rear, he commenced to fall back, bat fore he bad gone three miles they were again overtaken by the enemy, formed in line of battie, ~ the artillery opened a destructire fire on them. At this moment a portion of Ashby’s cavalry was observed apprencning with a white flag, as if desiring a parley, when Col. Kenly ordered his men to cease firing. They were allowed to ad- vance within pistol range, when the white was thrown down and a biue or black flag rai: and a charge from several quarters made on the exhausted men. Allof those who escaped per- sist that the cry of the enemy was “no quarters,”’ and that even the wounded were bayonetted as they lay on the field. This, however, we are not disposed bangs Scope! tocredit. Col. kenly is represented as having fought most desperately, and, wounded as he was, succeeded in cutting his way through the ranks bf the enemy, and bad not proctedes, far when he fell from & ‘s horse from the effects of a severe sabre wound that he received in this last engagement. He was lifted up and placed in an ambulance, and had not proceeded far before they were again overtaken and a volley of mus- ketry poured Into the ambulance, killing both horse and driver, and it ts sup) im poss! ble for the Colonel to have survi: this last assault. The men who have escaped, as is usual in such cases, consider that they are the only fortunate ones, but as they obtained horses, it is probabie that many others may have since comein. They were strongly impressed with the belief that no uarter was given to their comrades, but we thing this is to be doubted, and that a large number are prisoners, They all admit that our loss in the two first engagements was very light, and that Until the last charge on them they had succeeded ir. repulsing the enemy at every point of attack Major Miller, of the ist Maryland, is also re- gine to have been wounded, and is believed to a prisoner. Lieut. Col. Nathan T. Dushane had fought bravely throughout the day, and was with a division of the regiment iz the artillery when the last assault was made. What was bis fate our informant did not learn, The section of Knapp's Battery done most efficient service throughout the day, and stood by their guns until the last moment, when the Rebel cavalry, having broken through the in- fantry, rushed on them with pisto! and sabre, and secured the two guns. They had, however, but three rounds of ammunition left, baving fired nearly two hundred rounds during the day. After this our lines were broken, and Col. Ken! directed his men to secure thelr own safety, = { cut bis wae through the cavalry who sur- rounded him. This course on his part gives some color to the assertion that the enemy bad declared bis intention pi gd “no quarter,’? otherwise this gallant and experienced officer would, in this last extremity, have been justitied in surrendering himeelf command as prison- ers of war.— Baltimore American.
