The Intelligencer quotes approvingly the fol- lowing resolution offered in the Senate on Thurs- day last by that distinguished lover of ‘‘our fel- low-citizens”? down South, Mr. Charles Sumr fe 7“ ng forthe res- Mabment of e throughout the country, it is inexpedient the names of the victories obtained over our low-eltizens should be placed on the regiment- 1 colors of the United States.” The Republican doubts if any naval exploit or record exceeds the capture of New (-leans In good conduct, good fortane, and in the import- sauce of the result achieved. ee OUR MILITARY BUDGET. ise PARTICULARS OF THE GREAT VICTORY AT NEW ORLEANS We are permitted to make the following ex- tracts from a private letier, from the Assistant Paymaster and the Clerk of the Varuna, to their brother in this city. The extracts are from the pert of the ietter written by the Paymaster’s Clerk, Frank Fitch: “As the large vessei came down on us, one sheil from one of our guns killed and wounded twelve men on her, who were working her rifled pivot gua forward. Out of over one hundred men on Ler, they don’t claim to bave twenty survivors. Se you can judge of the terrible effect cf our guns. As roon as we settled her the otber one started to run, but it was no use, she could not outrun our esunor balls. The large vessel struck ustwice with « terrible crash, and the small one once. Their shells bad kitied three and wounded nine corte men. We were set on fire by them twice, and were rapidly sinking. You may imagine that it was getting desperate on the Varuna about that time. Nome of our men sung cut‘ they can stink us, but they can’t make us Aqui d: the flag.’ \n spite of fire, shot, and everything else, our men fired their guns till the water came up around the gun carriages. Charles and I hed ‘stripped for the fight,’ that is, we had teken off coat and vest: so we d nething, neteven a cont. Wecould not desert the poor gallant fel- lows who were wounded. Therefore could not save eny clothes.- Dr. Bruce, Charles Francis, (Master-at-Arms.) Charles and myself, got them out of the bold as soon as ible; but none too soon, for by the time we had the !ast one on the berth deck, our amputation table was floating grou nd the hold in five or six feet of water. 1 saw we would not get ull the wounded saved by hoisting them up through the main batch on the cot by block and tackle, so [ took one poor fellow on my back, end carried him up the fore bstch on the spar deck I then ran back and got another and helped himup. We have thecon- solation of knowing that although we saved noth- ing for curselves wesaved every wounded man. After we got the wounded on the spardeck; the ‘weter was running overthe berth deck. I waded back into the ward room as fast as I could run and ai unlocked the tafe and got out the quarterly psy receipt rolland all the money belonging to Goverrment.
