And be it further resolved, That we will sup- port noone for municipal office who will not subscribe to and endorse those ever memorable words of the immortal Webster—‘‘Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable.”’ The Chair hoped the resolutions would pass without a diseenting voice. He cheerfully and fully endorsed all tue resolutions except that one referring to Mayor Wallacn, which he could not endorse in part. His objection was the many re- movals of good men from office. He merely stated this to place himself right with the public. But be wou!d assent to the resolutions and give his cheerful support, nevertheless. Mr_ Gulick cbjected to tbe endorsement of the Administration. The meeting had been called irrespective of party, and be thought the en- joreement of the Administration would make it political affair; for the endorsement of Presi- dent Lincoln was the endorsement of a party. Mr. French explained that the resolution as originally offered in committee was much fonger, but all had been struck out except the endorse- ment of the President’s war policy. He ho) there was not one whe would not endorse that. For bimeelf he could endorse the whole of the resolution; but the impression appearing to be that this would make the meeting a party affair, be had stricken it out. [The part stricken out reads as follows: “And for the perpetuity of cur once glorious Union; and that we approve of the course of the Executive for the boid and independent stand taken by him Upon numerous occasions, and also for bis wise and judicious recommendations made to Congress from time to time.” —Rep } ‘The Chair understood the resolution offered as peel endorsing the war policy ef the Adminis- ition. Mr. Gulick said his own feelings personall: were in f.vor ach endorsement; but he want to conform as strictly as possibie to the call. If we intend to make a party affair of this, let us make it known at once Mr. Sargent ssid the call itself approved of the President's war policy. The Chair suggested that ths words of the call should be adopted; and offered the following as 8 substitute for the resolution offered by the com- mittee : Resolved, That, as citizens of the Fifth Ward, in meeting assembled, we cordially endorse the war policy of the Administration in putting down this infamous rebellion. baie eae was adopted with some slight op ion. ‘be committee reported the following nomina- natior For Alderman, Nathan Sergent; for Common Council, E.L Stevens, R. GREAT JUBILEE New Marxer, May 7.—The army to-day at noon fired a hundred guns in honor of the victory at Yorktown. The consolidated bands visited Gen- erals Banks, Williams and Hatcb, and played patriotic airs through the streets also. They vis- ited the camp of the Ira Harris cavalry also in honor of the gallant charge of yesterday. The details of that affair show that the rebel cavalry had a battery which they opened upon our men. The latter deployed, and waited until two of our guns hed been placed in position. The enemy’s battery was soon driven back; when the [ra Harris cavalry dashed on them with sabres and yells, driving them to the sub- urbe of the town. Our cavalry were commanded by Major Voight, of the 31 Battalion. Adjutant Hasbrouck, of the ira Harris Cavalry, 34 Battalion, was taken pris- oner by the enemy. The enemy’s force was 100 urs was less. The news of the victory at Williamsburg was received this afternoon and was read on dress parade in all the regiments. It was received with rapturous applause.
