Martin lectured at the Smithsonian. upon the subject of China and the Chinese. In 1850 the census gave China a population of 1,414,000,000 ‘The immense magnitude of China was owing to the character of her geographical boundaries and ber peculiar civilization, which had in many respects attained to a high degree, as was demon- strated by her early invention of gunpowder, and the com; y the dlece very of chemirry, her allk, porcelain, and literature. A! the amusing contrarieties of the Chinese are practices of shaving the head Instead of the face, wearing the outside the coat, and their pockets In their 5 Of shaking their fists at each other as a salutation, and insisting that the magnetic needle peints to the South insteed of the North. In noticing their character the lecturer regarded them as the “ wisest, brightest, meanest of man- kind.” Their Government has always been an absolute monarchy, the peculiar title of their emperor— Tient-sien, the son of Heaven—indicating their idea of his divine origin and supremacy. China bas been ‘governed for 217 years by logse seven sovere! none of whom ished by violence. Among the superstitions of the people are the ideas that when dense fogs arise from the earth, the mind of the emperor is biased by female influence, and that spots upon the face of the sun indicate that his mind is clouded. Earthquakes are as evidence or the instability of the empire, and comets as indications of a change of rulers. Al worship is required by the emperor of his subjects, none of whom can approach him ‘without a ceremonial of three kneelings and nine prostrations. Widows, orphans, the forsaken, and 8 bachelor, are ded as the most miser- able in China; and during a sojourn of years in that em ire, the lecturer never saw bat one old maid, who was regarded as a curi- wal isno such thing as birthright to the throne, the Emperor selecting bis successor often from a distant part of the empire, and the right of rebellion is secured to the people in the max- ims of their sages, recorded for the study of all. ‘The mandarins are branches of the root of impe rial power, of two classes, civil and military, only on the score of merit. The civil class is founded on literary distinction, compe- titlon being open toall. One ina hundred ex- amined with critical severity is admitted to the first degree. Every three years these graduates contend forasecond degree, one in a hundred obtaining it; a third degree entitling one to office in the government. This incites to literary pur- suits, aud strengthens the government. In some eases the student is an ctegenariam before he obtains even the second ; and the third —_ is so guarded that officials bhaye been put to death for selling academic honors. In private life the grandsire is the sovereign, often wielding the power of lifeand death. The sentiment of filial piety is universal, and several SS. uently live in the same house in most harmony. Brothers are not on 8n equal footing, but each older brother exerts authority over younger. Vows of brother- hood are taken in the bonds of friendship, and in each other it is the custom to extol the second person and depreciate the first, as in the following y:—Where is your palatial mansion’ Answer—My straw hovel is down by the river.’’ “What is the number of your young noblemen?’’ ‘I have four little puppies.’ ‘How is your virtuous wife?”’ “My stupid thorn bush is well,” &c. There is not the slightest variety in the female which is contracted to the smallest limits, noticing which the speaker gloried in the “full orbed hon perros Srp dayso amen — are subject extreme! usage, as many as a thevared. female le temple praying to be un- sexed in their state of being, so that they —— enjoy the privilege of lording it over cre- jon In conclusion, the lecturer reviewed the style of their literature, their religion, and the progress of christian civilizatien among them, and that the United States form a with France and Russia for the purpose of compelling England to cease from the forcible introduction of opium into A pee Creare ur —Pedestrians who . rele in the First Ward, yes- yy morn: ng: were shocked at observing large Lporiand ors = ar pre near : ‘westero gate aclosure. ‘was speed | circulated to the effect thata pores bad en @ barroom in the vicinity, and on leaving was pero g leg several soldiers, who ki and The facts in ease seem to be, that a sergeant of volunteers ‘8 bar room in the vicinity of the new bridge across Rock creek, In company with twe or three roughs, between 12 and 1 o’clock on Wednesda: night.
