Grant's Official Repert of the Capture of Fert Donelson. Heapgvarters ARMY IN THE FreLD, Fort Donelson, Feb. 16, 1862 General G. W. Cul/om, Chitf of Staff, De- partment of Missours : General—I am pleased to announce to you the uncondi surrender, this morning, of Fort Donelson, with twelve or fifteen thousand prisoners, at least forty pieces of artillery, and alarge amount of stores, horses, mules and other public property. I left Port Henry on the 12th inst., with a force of about 15,000 men, divided into two di- visions, under the command of Gens. McCler- nand and Smith. Six regiments were sent around by water the day before, convoyed by & gunboat, or, rather, started one day later than one of the gunboats, and with instruc. tions not to pass it. The troops made the march in good order— the head of the column arriving withia two miles of the fort at 12 o’clock m. At this point the enemy's pickets wero met and driven in. fortifications of the enemy were from this point gradually approached and surround- ed, with oceasionsl skirmishing on the line. The following day, owing to the non-arrivai of the gunboat and reinforcements sent by water, no ‘attack was made, but the investment was extended on the flanks of the enemy and drawn closer to bis works, with skirmishing all day. The evening of the 13th the gunboats and reinforcements arrived. On the 14th a gallant attack was made by F’ Officer Foote upon the enemy’s works with bis fleet. The engage- ment lasted probably one hour and a half, and bid fair to result favorably to the cause of the Union, when two unlucky shots disabled two of the armored gunboats, so that they were carried back by thecurrent. The remaining two were very much disabled also, having re- ceived a number of heavy shots about the pilot houses and other parts of the vessels. After these mi —. conoluded to make the investment of Fort Donelson as perfeet as pos- sible, and partially fortify and await repairs te gunboats. This plan was frustrated, =e ever, by the enemy making a most Tous attack upon our right wing, commanded by Gen. J. A. McClernand, with a portion of the force under Gen. L. Wallace. The enemy were repelled after a clesely contested battle of several hours, in which our loss was heavy. The officers, and particularly field-officers, suffered out of proportion. I have no means et of determining our loss even approximate- 'y, but it cannot fall short of 1, killed, wounded, and missing. Of the latter, I un- derstand through Gen. Buckner, about 250 were taken prisoners. I shail retain enough of the —. exchange for them, as they were immediately shipped off and not left for recapture. About the close of the action the ammuni- tion in the cartridge boxes gave out, which, with the loss of many of the field officers, pro- duced great confusion in the ranks. Seei that the enemy did not take advantage of thie fact, I ordered a charge upon the left—enemy’s right—with the division under General C.F. Smith, which was most brilliantly executed, and gave to our arms full asgurance of victory. The battle lasted until dark, giving us posses- sion of part of theirintrenchments. An attack was ordered upon their other flank, after the —- by General Smith was commenced, by the divisions under Generals McClernand and Wallace, which, notwithstanding the hours of exposure to a heavy fire in the fore part of the day, was a made and the enemy fur- ther . At ints thus gained, night having come on, all the troops encamped for the night, feel’ that a complete tory would crown their labors at an early hour in the morning. This morning, at a very early hour, Gen. S. £ Buckner sent 4 message to our camp under a flag of truce, proposing an armistice, fc. A copy of the co lence which ensued is herewith accom: ‘ I eannot mention individuals who specially distinguished themselves, but leave that to division. and brigadé officers, whose rts will be forwarded as soon as received. To di- vision commanders, however, Gens. MeCler- nand, Smith and Wallace, I must do the tice to say that each of them were with commands in the midst of danger, and were always ready to execute all orders, no matter what the to themselves. ® At the hour the attack was made on Gen. MoClernand’s command I was absent, having received a note from ‘cer Foote request- ee he being unable to call. My al staff—Col. T. D. Webster, chief of ; Colonel J. Riggin, jr., volunteer aid; Capt. 8. A. Rawling, scting adjutant general; Capts. C. B. and W 8. Hillyer, aids, Lieut. Col. VE. The House was on Saturda: discussion of the past and future conduct of the war. Mr. Boyce, of 8. C., argued at some length im advocacy. of an offensive policy. The plan he pro) was the appointment of a commander-in-chfef of the army, and leave to him the direction of military operations, and suggested Toombs, who the revolu- tionary spirit. In his opinion the great error was in not prosecuting the war more vigor- ously in the beginning, when the North was comparatively unpre: and when her 75.000 three months’ men were gathered at Washington, ag it were, on a kind of Fourth of July celebration. Mr. Machen, of Ky., replied to Mr. Royce He said that when the House undertook to act upon the conduct of those who had the man- ment of our campaigns, he fhought they should be arraigned before the Hoase with a fair show for defense. He asked gentlcmen, before they raised the banner of mn, to demonstrate the feasibility of that policy. We were usurping power to others when we attempted to dictate the policy for conduct- ing this war. h t. Foote asked if it was usurpation to ex- press an honest conviction on the conduct of the war; ifso, he wanted to go home. ee Mr. Machen continued, and asked if those who contended for the ive policy in- ‘tended to trammel our military leaders by resolutions from tlis body. He had no pre- judise against, or undue partiality for, the resident or any member of his Cabinet. If the peucy recommended were adopted, arms would be indispensable, and asked how and where these were to be obtained. Mr. Foote he could vote for no resolu- tion liable to be construed into an endorse- ment of the War and Navy Departments. He was prepared to demonstrate by developments that neither of ihe heads of these Departmen ie were competent for the pos ® they held. After further discussion, the subject was laid on the table. ina Churning in Winter.
