Cornection.—The agent for the Associated | Press makes the following statement explanatory of amatter which bes created some discussion: Wasutxcton, Feb 23—The following para- graph, heretofore stated, added to the official report of the first day’s proceedings of the, late Rallroad Convention : “Secretary Stanton paid a bigh compifment to the young an¢ ant friend at bis side, Major- General \ , in whom be had the utmost confidenc: d the result of whose military , and well-matured plans were now exhibited to a rejoicing country.’ The officers of the convention having been ap- lied to in various quarters to say whether this language was used by Secretary Stanton, ‘feel bound to state that such was not the case, and these words above quoted were added after the report bad been furnished to the agent of the As- sociated Press. ‘Th! signed by Erastus Corn- ing, president, and Thos Rimler, J As the article in question occas ment, especially among those unscquainted with the few and pizin facts in the case, the agent of the Associated Preas hen a former assertion, that the paregraph was himself added to the official notice of the prockedings It was based on a statement from recollection of what was said on that occasion, without pretending to ver- bal accuracy; and further, that tke information was not offered, but furnished on application It now appears, from the only authentic denial ob- tainabie, namely : of the President and one of the Secretaries—th.i the impression made on the mind of the informant, was erroneous. The Aaistant Treasurer received to-day one million dollars in bends for distribution te the banks, including the first instalment of the de- nomination of $500 - Y. Journal of Com- Tue Twenty-Szconp in BaLtinore —The day was ushered in with the ringing of bells, salutes, &c., and at 10 o'clock the national flag was displayed upon the Court House, Masonic Hall, where the Usited States cours are held, and at other prominent points. At 12 o'clock the firing of national salutes began in earnest, the fort on Federal Hill leading off with the first un, end followed by Fort McHenry, Fort Mar- shall, United States receiving ship Alleghany, national vessels be members of the Fountain Wreckers Union Association fired a salute of 100 guns. FORT COLUMBUS. Yesterday a dispatch reached the headquarters bere, from an unofficte! source at Cairo, announ- cing that the Stars and Stripes were then floating over the rebel fort at Columbus. It was not credited, as it was known here (at the headquarters) that the expedition to which it was alleged that the rebels had surrendered Columbus had been ordered simply for recon- noltering purposes, rather than to make an attack. We telegraphed to Cairo in the course of the day for more particular information, and received in reply, from a reliable source, the following dispatch, showing this news to be incorrect: Carro, Ill., Feb. 23, 1962 —Ed. Star: The steamer thatcame up first from Columbus brought report that Columbus had surrendered, and |! was reported all over town in five minutes, and seemed to be reliable. {t turns out to be 8 mistake, I am sorry to say. NOT EVACUATING MANASSAS Reliable information Is in this city, to ‘he effect that no considerable force of the rebels have left their position at and in front of Manassas. Many of their re-enlisted men having been furloughed for sixty days, toenable them to visit their re- spective homes, have, however, departed. As they filled (in departing) a number of trains for some days, the rumor tbat they were going away by regiments, got out. Their departure does not amount to materially weakening the enemy in our front, though it is very questionable whether they will ever again join their respective regi- ments, owing to the successes of the arms of the United States, the destruction of their railroad connections, &c NAVY YARD The Stepping Stones left the flotilla at an early hour this morning, and came up to the yard. She reports nothing new down the river. The steamer Metamora ran the blockade at an early hour this morning, and has reached this clty. Six or eight shots were fired at her from the secesh batteries—the only time they have fired at anything for a week or more—but none struck her. EXTRACT OF A LETTER FROM COMMODORE L. M. GOLDSBOROUGH. “U. S&S Fras Steamer PHILADELPHIA, eff Roanoke Island, Feb 14, 1862.—I forgot to say to you in my pencil note, closed and mailed an hour since, that never on earth wasa greater lie per- petrated by the hand and head of man than the one in the slip of newspaper you sent me, statin that during the violent pale we encountered I was taken down with an attack of rheumatic gout, and entirely disabled. There is not a scintilia of truth in it; nor was there the slightest ground for it Throughout the whole gale I was in perfect health, and as busy asa bee. And as to my re- mark about my volunteer officers, and my in- vocation to heaven, it is all pure fiction, and only calculated todo harm and wound sensibilities. My volunteer officers are all sdmirable men, and do their duty vloriousiy. The God of battles has been with us, and to him we owe everything My officers and men are tru uly glorious’ ANOTHER RECONNOISANCR TOWARDS CENTER- VILLE—CAPTURE OF ELEVEN REBEL PICK RTS. A reconnoisance was made Saturday morning from the division of Gen. Smith, consisting of the Cameron Dragoons and three’ regiments of infantry, all under the command of Col. Fried- man. The infantry separated for several Points, ape Vienna, Flint Hilland Hunter's Mills, to temporarily remain there asa reserve for the cavalry, while the latter proceeded toward Cen- terville, making a circult within the lines of the rebel pickets. The result was the capture of eleven mounted rebel pickets, two of whom belonged to Steuart’s Regiment, acd the others tp Rausom’s Ist North Carclina Regiment. There was an exchange of some twelve shots, but the only person wounded was one of the North Carolinians. The prisoners were brought to Washington yesterday afternoon and are confined in the old capitol building. No Information either as to the position or strength of the enemy at Centerville was ob- tained. The reconnoitering party started at 3 o’clock in the morning, and were absent from their camps about tea hours. — ——-—+»+ e+ REBEL ACCOUNTS, (Telegram to the Richmond Enquirer, Feb. 20.) GENERALS PILLOW, FLOYD AND BUCKNER CUT THEIR WAY THROUGH THE PEDERAL LINES Avovsta, Feb. 20.—Passengers who reached ! here from Nashville to-night, assert that Brig. Gens. Pillow, Floyd and Buckner, after a gallant defense of two days, cut thelr way through the enemy, and are in the nejzhborhood of Nashville. Gen. A. S. Johnston was at Gallatin, and had no idea of surrendering Nashville. (The possengers must bave left Nashville early Tuesday morning, provided they made all con- nections, in order to reach Augusta on Wednes- day night. The news they communicate there is up to Tuesday morning.) THE TENNESSEE NEWs. At the time of writing this we have received no dispatzhes from the West. If, at a later hour, any should come, they will be found in the tele. grapbic column. A dispatch was, however. received bere yester- day from an officer In the Quartermaster’s Depart- ment, dated at Cleveland, in Tennessee. This is a point near Chattanooga, and is in railroad con- nection with Nashville. The dispatch states that Generals Johnston, Pillowand Buckner were at Nashville, witha large force, and had madea stand. The commissary stores were represented as all safe. This statement seems so reasoneble in all its parts, that in the absence of more direct informa- tion, we butld strong hopes upon it. The tele- graph must surely be down between C’ eveland and Nashville,as we receive nonews from the latter, where We most naturally expect it DISASTERS AT FORT DONELSON. [from the Richmond Enquirer, Feb. 20 } Very few of our readers, we presume, placed much confidence in the Northern reports which have reached us by the flag of truce from Fortress Monroe, in regard to the number of Confederate prisoners taken at Fort Donelson. We find, how- erer, that the Yankee rcport of fifteen thousand prisoners being taken is not much greater than the report which has obtained curreney in some por- tions of the South. The following ene} dispatch was pub- lished in the Columbus (Ga ) Enquirer of the 18th inst., and also in the pyres (Ga) papers of the same date : CoLumaus, Ga., Feb. 17.—The follow'ng dis- atch was received here early this morning, cau: fo intense anxiety and excitement: HATTANOOGA, Feb. 17—Fort Donelson has been taken, with 13,000 Confederates. Nashville bas surrendered. Later dispatches from Shelby- ville confirm the taking of Nashville by the Ped- eralists Itis strange that such dispatches from excited private individuals should find their way Into newspapers inthe South. Nashville has not been surrendered, mor ts there the slightest existence, $0 far, to sustain the statement of the capture of 13,000 Confederate soldiers, SICKNESS OF GEN. BEAUREGARD.
