Just as the second edition of the Star of to-day goes to press, a dispatch from General Halleck’s headquarters has reached here addressed to Sen- ator Thompson, saying—‘Fort Donelson is taken, with 15,000 prisoners, and Floyd among them ”’ At 2 p.m. no despatch verifying the above had reached the headquarters here, where its truth, however, was not regarded as being im- probable. Our latest positive advices from Fort Donelson are up to 12 o'clock on the night of the 13th, when it was confidently believed by our officials that the question of the surrender of the pleee was one of hours only. So weare inclined to believe this good news is true. The President's Thanks tothe Fercee that Captured Fort Henry and Roancke Island. Wasuinoton Crry, D.C, Feb. 15, 1862 The President, Commender-in-Chief of the Army und Navy, returns thanks to Brig. Gen Burnside and Flag Officer Goldsborough, and to Brig. Gen. Grant and Flag Officer Foote, and the land and naval forces under their respective com- mands, for their gallant achievements in the cap- ture of Fort Henry and at Roanoke Island. While it will be no ordinary pleasure for him to acknowledge and reward, in becoming man- ner, the valor of the living, he also recognizes his duty to pay fitting honor to the memory of the gallant dead. The charge at Roanoke Island, like the bayonet charge at Mill Spring, proves that the close grap- ple and sharp steel of loyal and patriotic soldiers must always put rebels and traitors to flight The late achievements of the navy show that the flag of the Union once borne in proud glory around the world by naval beroes.will soon again float over every rebel city and stronghold, and that it shall forever be honored and respected, as the embiem of Liberty and Union, in every land and upon every sea By crder of the President: Epwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. Gipton WELLES, Secretary of the Navy. Order in Respect to Passes and Prisoners. War Department, ? Washington City, D.C , Feb. 13, 1862 § Ordered, Ist. Between three and four thousand Federal troops landed at Eden- ton. The population of Edenton is about two thousand, and it is distant from Suffolk about fifty miles.
