He will probably return to Washington to-morrow. FinanctaL.—The New York Post of last eve- ning says: There is a steady demand for gold at the board at 10344103) cash, and 1034, buyer sixty days. The sales this morning were large, reaching $200,000, chiefly on time. The m market is without a special change. Some of the banks which took the notes freely yesterday are now confining them- selves to sums. The Assistant Treasurer received from Wash- ington another million dollars of Government stock. The banks bave now received the entire amount of 7 30 Treasury notes due them, the last bxv.ag been delivered yesterday. They also have received 83,500,000 of stock. ‘Tuz Movement Ur rum Texxessex River. — The St. Louis Democrat the following information in relation to the movement of the Federal forces up the Tennessee river: Considerations of prudence bave prevented us from referring to a movement of some eaperinnce from , for which active, though silent, Preparatiors have been going on in this Depart- ment for a week past; but the movement is now so pear at hand esto be beyond the reach of jeopardy by # mention of it. Six or eight regi- meinis of infantry and three batteries of artillery heve been sent from this city to Cairo, to be sent thence to Paducab; and several of the most effi- clent gunboats at Cairo have been placed in con- dition for actual service—a fact which indicates that the moveme@pt is to be one against some river of the enemy, in which the gunboats and a land force will co-operate. The point of attack is surmised to be Fort Henry, situated about fifty-miles up the Tennes- eee river, near the Southern Kentucky line, but this is not cones, known. It will possivle te start a force of 15,000 men from Paducah, and it ls probably a demonstration will be made upon Columbus, by a force from Cairo, at the same time. . The reduction of Fort Henry wiil not be a difficult task, as the enemy’s works are open bat- tertes, defended by 2 garrison of about 4,000 men, who may be driven from the position by theshells from our gunboats. This movement is being mede upon important information gained by the late reconnolasances in force from Cairo and Paducah Fort Henry stands in the river bottom, just be- low a bend of the stream, and at the head of straight stretch of two miles. The land around it is bigher than the fort, and batteries placed on Thearmament Tivers by our gunboats for a distance of a hundred miles from their moutbs, we would be able to seize the Memphis branch of the Louisville and Nashville Rallroad, which, commencing at Bowl. Green, rags through Carlksville and Paris to Union City, connecting ui the latter place with the road run- nizg South from Columbus. This line of road is most important to the enemy, since it affor we take Fort Henry, we shall have to ight a bat- tle at or near Paris Gen. Bravrscagy’s Reroat ‘be report of the ** Battle of Managsas,*’ a; Ee calls the battle of Bull Run, has, after a di ay of nearly seven months, been published. It isa paper of great length, and gives a detailed account of the various phases of the battle, but says nothing of the reasons for delaying the publication. According to this report effective force of Besusezara on the morning of July 2ist,amounted to 21.853 men and twenty-nine guns, to which must be added the ‘‘army of the Shenandoah” ‘est =. ‘me groand aeringan says men were on gre uri the battle, thus maki: 2 total of 30,667 men at Heau- *s comumund, of whom all except perhaps were engaged. In General McDowell’s re- ay of the battle it appears that not more than 000 or 19,000 of our troops were really ed with the enemy, the bulk of our army rema! ning out of action. 1po8 reports 269 killed, and 1,483 wounded; total, the having len » and | Siar: The attention of the pub Monroe, | ebusetts, Chairman of the 7° operations at the seat of | moreover, sppesred in a recent We OUR MILITARY BUDGET.
