SmrtHsomian Lecture. —Last evening, Dr. Hayes, the Arctic explorer, delivered the fourth lecture of the regular Smithsonian course upon “Arctic Exploratiops.”” The lecture room was densely crowded, far beyond that of any lecture thisseason, hundreds being unable to obtain seats. The exped‘tion of Mr. Hayes, cons’sting of the schooner United States, of 133 tons, and sixteen rsons, left Boston in 1860. The little vessel had nm engaged in the West India trade, and was fittei up as perfectly as possible for the great voyage before her. Her sides were strengthened ‘with beams and braces, her outside thickly sheathed, and her bow ted by plates of iron one-fourth of an inch in thickness; and was so heavily laden that her deck was but eighteen inches above the water line. The expedition halted at the various stations in Greenland, where it provided iteelf with dogs, sledges, three Esqui- taux hunters and an interpreter. Leaving the most northerly station in August, 1860, they pushed on for the North Sea by way of Meiville Bay and Smith’s Strait. The bay (100 niles ftom civilizttion) was reached on the 934 ‘ef Aagost, in the midst of a severe storm of thick driving snow, and surrounded by icebergs in every direction, which assumed in the bright sunlight of the succeeding day the most fantastic forms and glittering colors; some with tall spires towering up far above the waters, with lofty arches, and long galleries through them shaped themselves into immense gothic cathedrals; others into Greek temples, and some into houses, ships, and even animals. One berg had anarch so large that the schooner could sail through it with ease, and was christened the “triumpha! arch.’ At times these mountains of ice were like immense fountains, scouting upon all sides bright glit- tering cascades of melted snow, and pouring tor- rents of water into the sea. Some of the ice! ry ‘were two miles long and two buadred and any feet bight above the surface, while it must be borne in mind that only one eighth of a berg is visible, its immense ‘weight of many millions of tons settling it far Zown into the ocean. But little fied ice was encountered in going through Melville Bay. These fields of ice are from two feet to many miles in width, with cracks ® ad narrow openings through them, into waich the vessel with sail set rushes with grer’s force, widening the passage by her own a. as ‘Smith’ a and stand- over to ‘west coast, expedition met win severe winds and floating compelling them to anchor near the shore. gale in- creasing, the anchors dragged and the schooner suffered considerably, cape ortion of her Dulwarks and tearing her . ‘The party then made for the east coast where they found the ice loose, but thick, in many placessixty feet through. Pressing into this the iron ‘was torn of like brown paper, the cut-water broken off, radder disarranged, and the vessel lifted up al- most entirely out of the water, while the immense Pressure of the ice upon the sides of the vessel caused ber beams to squeak and groan terribly. Winter coming on, and fearful of being frozen up, the expedition went into winter quarters in 2 large bay, which they named *‘Port Hope.”’ The achooner was fastened to the rocks with four haw- sers, banked up at the side with snow, and cov- ered with a good roof, and was soon locked fast ia the thickening ice. A neat little room was fitted up in the hold, a stove put in, and every- thing made comfortable. Their fuel consisted of anthracite coal, which, with two fires, was con- sumed at therate of a ton permenth. Their time was now occupied in hunting and scientific ob- servations; the former proving so successful afto furnish them with one hundred deer before win- ter was fairly upon them. Besides this they sup- plied themselves Phar Smee of sage foxes and ptharmigans, the lattera species of grouse. T also captured one bear. Walrus, white wi , deer, foxes, &c., are in abundance, and ‘were a well organized enterprising company to go out there they could in one year procure e suf- ficient carge to defray the expenses of all the Arctic. expeditions fitted out from the Un'ted Brates.
