To all such weak- need and supp! inted there can be but one argument add Weare into the war— no matter how we got into it—and the surest way to get out fs by cannon, sword and rifle. And to those who, in the trepidation which seizes the tame-spirited, imagine that there is & probability or possibility of the enemy plant- ing its impious standard—(a standard which once claimed the homags of all of us, »but whose very folds are now blackened by the hideous atmosphere of tyranny, infidelity and crime)—if there are those who dream that the banner staffof the enemy will be driven fur- ther itite the soll of Tennessee than in that of Eastern Virginia. we have only to say—peace to such miserable delusions. There is_ po question in our mind of the re- sult which this winter campaign will close if Wo are true to ourselves. Now isthe time for ction. Let no man think to escape the re- sponsibility which has been imposed by the great, good God on every man, on all men here in the straggling South. Let no man console himself with the heartless sophistry that he can live under any government. Such a spirit is ft for slaves, not for the beaven-sent im- pulse of freemen. No southere man of an up- right, independent, wanly nature can ever live under the Lincoln despotism. The craven who contents himself with skulking. like a pi with bis nose in the gutter, instead of breath: ing the air ef God's blue welkin, might man page exist, and to fish out of the missma of bis own degradation a disgusting subsidy, like the rag-pickers who Glob « livelihood from the gy ae ene of life. » writer of this paragraph knows thing about Northern vemos Northern tyran- ny, Northern illiberality, Northern ‘ion, jealousy and hatred. The decree of a seps- rate existence hes gone forth, and it should now be the Sarseg wenive of every true map to be driven from face of the earth, to die and rot, rather than yield his home to devas- tation, his household gods to destruction, and the whole fatare of his life and the life of his country to insult, soorm and disgrace. Now is the moment for action. Wecan almost feel the salphurous breath of the eneuy tainting our pare at ere. We can almost hear the hiss with which he is preparing for the death-stroke. We can almost see cruel, Dlood-shot eyes glittering savagely over our ramperts. Let ee for an instant. The crisis is at band. ithin fortydays we shall know all. The Leff Crop. This very valuable crop is too often entirely overlooked. Multitudes of farmers have yet to gather their first leaf of harvest. Garden- ers very generally appreciate the value of this article; and, where it is accessible, it enters inte their most valuable composts. Chemical analysis shows that the leaves of plants are tich in fertilizing matter. much richer than the wood. Eleven percent. of the leaves of the elm are ashes, while the wood only gives two percent. Other trees show still greater difference. The constant growth of forest, even upon poor land, is doubtless ovine, to the annual deposit of leaves upon the surface of the earth, these having drawn fertilizing mat- ter from the surface where ic ailable. Every one has noticed the rank wih of grass where the lesves have been burned or allowed to decay. Nothing is better for the sty or stables than a good leaf bed. The time of rastling leaves has come in the garden, upon the lawn, in the orchard, and in the forest.— American Agricu/lturist. B R Sugar. John H. Klippart writes to the Ohio Farmer that Prof. F A: Mot, of Columbus, has suc- ceeded in the manufacture of sugar from the beet. From a computation based upon his experiment, six and a half tons of sugar can be proviuced per acre. or 6,000 lbs. of sugar and €°0 gallons of syrup. Kating the sugar at six cents ed pound, and the syrup at forty cents ner gallon. the product per acre is $600. Prof. Mot bas ordered from France sugar-beet root seed to plant ten acres next spring, and is preparing machinery to manufacture it. PA cee Let The A my Worm. J.W Brown. of Coles county, Ml., says, in the Prairie Farmer :—‘-I have been a resident of this part of the country for n seven years. The pny worms their »ppearance here frequently, and until we took to turning our hogs upon our grass, did us much damage. I saved my meadows last eammer by turning my bogs on them as soon 88 the worms made their appearance.” Tanning Sheep-Skins with the W on. Sprinkle this powder upon the flesh side of the skin and fold together with the wool out; hang up in acool place. In two of three days, as soon as dry, take down and scrape the flesh side with a blunt-edged knife till clean. This completes the process.
