Price-THREE CENTS. NEWS FROM THE REBEL STATES. Now and then we have indications of the ter- rible straiteto whiéh the Southern States ate put, and the impatience with which the le submit to the burdens imposed on them by the leaders of the rebellion. A gentleman from Memphis has furnished the Evansville (Ind.) Journal with a copy of the Memphis Argus of the 5th, which contains an article that occa. sioned considerable excitement at the ‘“ Bluff City,” and induced the vigilance committee to wait upon the editor. As it goes to show that everything in the South does not me as merry asa marriage bell,’’ we copy it in full most noble policy was to find in the rapid use of our early revolutionary enthusiasm an over- inateh for the slower and Lode hinge but more soe orth. Where shall we ask relief? id we ask it save in the nee on whomi have been lavished our hearts’ blood, our ho} our wealth, our whole; where but upon the banks of the Potomac? When shall we see an end of the farce there being enacted at our e: ? Indirectly, évery mouthful we eat is taxed; our babies wear taxed caps and shoes, our boys write on taxed paper, our girls wear taxed cal- icoes, our men do a taxed business, and hope- lessly ride in a taxed hearse to a taxed grave, id we, forsooth, are hurting ‘‘ the cause” if we dare to turn from Messrs. Mason and Sli- dell to look at the country we were born and bred in, and, having looked, we are hurting the cause if we dare tell what we see. Our cause is right, itis holy. Our suffering may be God’s pelos of success, but who, seeing what might have been, and knows what is be- ing suffered through its undone, can re- frain from cursing the selfishness or idiocy that. ped the wering Beauregard, that arrested the march of Price, that checked the gallant Jackson. We have gazed imploringly on the lion, while the fox has been weaving his toils. Our press and our people have trusted long enough We now ask, are we tocontinue hemmed in for an- other six months, and lack all things, or shall our armies on to Washington, and lack nothing. INJURING THE CAUSE. (From the Argus of the Sth. “A knowledge of the disease is half the as to physial disso, od’ keowledg® of tow as " a know! of the fracture came is the best the sui can have to obtain him a mental view of the shattered bones. We measure the value of a household servitor by the efficiency displayed by him in the ; and so should we that of a ublic and official. Hew is the house- old? means what kind of a housekeeper. Where order and happiness reign, there we say rules the good steward; where confusion and needless want exists, we censure the steward, and so it should be with the rulers of nations. We have yet to learn that this Confederacy is the private aie ong of Jefferson Davis, cr the 7 domain of his Cabinet, and we find it still harder to comprehend how either the President or his Cabinet came to be considered the autocrat dispensers of weal and woe to this people, untrammeled by any responsibility to to the same. We, for one, were and are far from consid- ering that in voting for the secession of Ten- nessee from the despotism of Lineoln we were merely making a choice between two irrespon- sible sultans, propped by duplicating divans. We never meant in abandoning the Union to abandon with it the rights of speech and of the press, and as long as wecan wag a tongue or wield a pen weshall do both in the assertion of truth, however palatable or unpalatable to Presidents, Cabinets, minorities or majorities. Our assertion, last Tuesday, of the true state ef our affairs, has caused quite a flutter among afew home soldiers, irresponsible and illegal wielders of authority, etc., men who, holding their povitions from the higher servitors of the people, think it sacrilege, and ‘+ weakening of the cause,”’ to fault any of their acts or no acts; and who, unable to deny our statements, would cover the sins of their superiors by asserting that a statement ,of the results arising from said sins is encouragement and comfort to the enemy. We seldom anathematize, but in such connection we ean scarce help saying some- thing of the enemy. We spoke and of the state of this Confederacy, which, judging from the policy of both cabinets, is alread better known to the Federal Cabinet. than it is to our own. We spoke and speak of the ill-conducting of this war, which has now taken from our homes some three or four hundred thousand of our best and bravest; which has paralyzed all busi- ness, save that which puts the money we can so illy spare into the pockets of the creatures of said President and Cabinet. Of this war we spoke, when we said so much might have been one in it that bas been left undone. Those at the bead of affairs were leaders to the war. We ask how are they leading through it? When have been made to stand still, and id kicks as the Northerner chooses he pleased and where he pleased. : rd our soenie blamed for pot t appears they were not permit! toaee The smothered report of Beauregard hasmade that truth clear enough. We have for months and months been told that England would do our fighting for us on the seas. We bi been told everything, save this one thing: that in the cities of the North lie the keys of our blockaded ports, and the peace we seek and need. We see access to that peace rendered more and more distant hy ‘he »ondrously-accumu- Isting power he Federal armies and nary. We see the sdvance ‘hat was easy six ee d.ficuit w-day, aud likely to be impossible Seasenow. We that from a shoe latchet to a steam engi e lack everything, and that the families ir obedient soldiers are suffer- ing from the seeming fabulous prices they have to pay for everything of domestic use. We look 30 the future, and, seeing nothing but war, ask ourselves, ask our readers, ask our rulers, why all looks darker and darker, as day follows day; and our vast armies to rot in their camps, while mothers and sisters suffer from their al ce at home. Three times since the inception of this has the road been opened unto us into the very heart of the North. In July, after Manassas; when Fremont resi ; when Johnson moved to BowlingGreen. Webi: Beauregard, Price or Johnson; bi not permitted to do w Lost Max.—A gentleman named Mr. For- ward Movement has been missing for several months past. He was thought to have been seen at Manassas Plains, but it proved not to be him; it was Mr. Trotter, of the firm of Street Walker & Legget. He was again supposed to have been seen at Leesburg, but it proved to be Mr. Diver, of the firm of Sinker, Swimmer & Traveler, who left without paying Mrs. Po- tomac her wash bill. He was again thought to have been seen in Missouri, but it turned out to be Mr. Extravagance, of the firm of Woolly Horse, Rocky Mountain. He was a few days since thought to have been near on one er both sides of Green river, Ky., but his friends met with another disappointment; it was not him. It was Mr. Slip Beck over-the-river & Co., doing a forwarding business backward to Squire Mr. Forward Movement is about 28 years old, more og less, five feet ten or ten feet five high; black whiskers, dresses fine, wearing a heavy gold fob chain manufactured from the finest candlestick brass; he is a tall, thin, thick set man, with very I; feet; some think he has gradually wilted down in his boots. He will deny being any relation to James Bu- chanan, the Last Rose of Northern Summer. He is a blood relation to Mr. On to Richmond; his mother is almost distracted on his account, fearing he may be burnt. On account of his sluggish temperament, she avers he was, when achild, so lazy he would not break out with the measles, or whoop with the whooping cough. [he old lady is grieving for her sprightly offspring, but is yet willing to surrender him to the country, eoming to the conclusion, on account of his monstrous feet, that he must have died standing. All papers a to the cause of Mr. For- ward Movement will confer a favor upen the surviving relatives by giving this one inser- tion.— Nashville Gazette.
