The national army restii upon Bird’s Point, Cairo, and Paducah, is faced by that of the Confederates resting on Columbus, Hickman, Mayfield and Dover, inclosing between them the portion of Kentucky west of the Cumber- land river The fort on the State line near Dover has of late been strengthened, but it is still an inconsiderable work. A rebel camp sixteen hundred strong is reported at that Point. West of that, some sixteen miles, is camp Beauregard, where the rebels have six thousand troops, at latest accounts. This is on the line of railroad between Bowling Green and Memphis. From tne natute of the prepsration it is’dis- coverable that the object of the expedition is to attsek and eapture this force if possible, end then bold the position. This, if successful, will effectually flank the rebels at Columbus, may be very seriously contested by the rebel forces from Memphis, Columbus, and Nasbyiile. Its great feature will be, however, to distract ‘the atterttion of the Confederates before Bowling Green, and by drawing off from their forces give to Genera!
