Tux METROPOLITANS AND THEIR -Nick New CLotuxs —Since our police denned their stylish brass buttoned overcoats and et ceteras on New Year's day, bec oer said to be the best dressed men in town. The transformation was so sudden and complete, however, that a great many cases of mistaken identity occurred, some of them rather comical. Asan illustration, we relate two inci- dents, one of which occurred on "tother side of Rock Creek and one on this side. One of the Georgetown patrolmen, who ‘ gal- liently” served his country as a lieutenant in the three months’ volunteers, acquired, in an arduous campsign on the Potomac, above the Chain Brid, n which any number of rebels would killed if on bave been found, avery ial air. Being “off duty” a night or two since—patrol duty—be doffed his police cap and put on another, which heightened the mili- tary effect of the overcoat and blue inexpressibies. In this “ rig” he came down street, and lounged into a store not a hundred miles from the omnibus stand, and was engaged relating his twofold ex- perieaces as soldier and policeman when a squad of the Provost Guard was suddenly halted at the door. The officer in charge of the squad came in, and touching bis bat with a manner expres- sive of a stern sense of duty, tempered with cour- tesy and the deference due to superior rank, blandly inquired, “ W!l you allow me, sir, to ast if you Lavea © Certainly,”’ answered our patrolman, who is not easily abashed, “ cer- tainly, sir; and he forthwith drew from his pocket his silver badge of office, with the device ** Metropolitan police,’ and held it before the eyes of the astonished provost officer. That gen- eman looked alternately at the badge and at the belongings of its owner—cap, coat and white- pants—and with some emberrassment ejaculated, ‘‘{ really beg your pardon, sir. I opt pe were a staff officer. That looked like a gold stripe on your leg, and your—really— good evening, sir.” He hastily beat a retreat, while the object of bis mistake looked around on the bystanders with an air which said plainly, “See what it is to have a military bearing.”” Now for the other fellow. One of our Wash- ington policemen—we will not mention the pre- cinct—said not a word to his wife of the arrivel of the new uniform, thinking to astonish the good ‘woman by his brilliant ap ince. Having donned it, he did not go home till twilight, when he knocked for admittance. Mrs. Patrolman looked from an upper window, and seeing a dis- tinguished-looking visitor at her front door, asked the object of his visit. He said he wanted to come in. moon pas that he had better go away from there, not insult an honest woman. After he bad excited her wrath to the highest itch, and feeling somewhat chilled by standing in the o; air, explained, and asked if she did not Know her ‘‘dear bubby.”” She told him if he did not go away, and quit insulting ber, she would arouse the neighburs, which she led todo, by screaming at the top of her voice. A crowd soon gathered, but the lady had shut down the window and retired—in hysterics, provably After some delay, and our hero me an expla- nation to bis neighbors, which they did not deem — ores me poms = : the as the rear, ngress by getting through a back window. The denouement was, no doubt, interesting, but was not visible to outsiders. A Miszraste Famity —Saturday evening, a sergeant and two men detailed from the guards above the Chain Bridge brought to this city a ‘woman named Mary Riley for selling liquor to the soldiers. The woman lost her husband afew months ago, and bas been living in the most mis- erable condition since, trying to raise three small children, the oldest about seven years of age, the youngest nursing. The soldiers in com; ion brought them all to the city, and they were taken before Justice Donn. {n view of the condition of the mother, who expressed a desire that her children might be cared for, the Justice trans- ferred them to the Metropolitan Police, and were sent to the asylum for ninety ~~. by Justice Walter, whence they will ——— transferred to the almshouse by the commissioners.
