Senrovs Avvain —Last night, Patrolman Fen- called on by Mr. Isaac Herzberg wick wae Greet, ack of the National Hotel, to ‘2 young man from his door, ving in a disorderly manner. The man was te- to Justice Donn’s office; but it appearing to more than a misdemeanor, growing out of the intoxication of the prisoner, be was taken to the guardbouse. There he was subjected to search, when it was discovered that he was wounded in two slight cut in the flesby part of the right arm, below elbow, and ‘a more serious wound bebiod right shoulder. of it, went to in- ascertained from Mrs. Herzberg that the stabbed the man. She went to the house with Mr Allen. and a iminary ination was had before Justice ‘alter; in Which it ap that the wounded man, whvte name is Daniel O’ Hanlon, a waiter at the Nattonal Hotel, being intoxicated, stopped at Mr. *s door and behaved very rudely to im; and he went for a patrolman While be was gene, the man assaulted Mrs. H , calling her very opprobrious names—as “« d—d w—e, d—d b—h,” &c., repeating them until she became enraged, seized asword and went at him, inflicting the wounds, as she rendily admitted. A young man pamed Chas. Kearney attempted to get O'Hanlon away, and put his band on O’Harlon’s shoulder for purpose, when the sword descended and struck off the little & of hislefthand. Prob- ably thesame blow inflicted the wound in O’Han- Jon's shoulder. Dr. Lindsley attended O’ Hanlon at the mggere yore — Me ueeret Se detter quarters; and there Ing no danger of a fatal result, Mrs Herzberg was adnu!tted to $3,000 bail for farther hearing. An Ewyeneztic Poticeman.—Yesterday after- noon Mr.C.D Welch, of Georgetown, happening to be in the city, meta man named Adoip Grose- man and a colored boy driving bis cow along at the corner of Seventh and H streets. Intimating to them that it was his cow, he told the boy to follow him and drive her along, when they left suddenly. Groseman, after 2 bard chase, was captu by Patrolman Grant, and Patrolman Frasier took charge of the cow. Groseman was taken before Justice Donn and committed to jail forcourt. On the way to jail with Ser avin —_ patrolman saw a little gi in a parlor ng extinguish a fire ‘which bad broken out ina dwel- ling on Leuisiana avenue, opposite City Hall. Selzing his prisoner by the collar he pushed him inte the house, and succeeded in putting out the fire, which, fortunately, was only the flames of the gauze cover of a bo ia chandelier which had caught fire. Groseman broke from him and tried again to escape, but Grant was too fast for him and overtook him on Four-and-a-half street, near C, and conveyed bim safely to jail, where he will remain to await the order of the Criminal Court. A Prornecr.—The following prophecy, trans- lated a few since bya ly who isan in- mate of a religious institution in the vicinity of Washington, bas a peculiar interest at this time. The original is in Latin, and bears marks of great antiquity. It issaid to have been written bya recluse some centuries since. “ Before thirteen united Shall be thrice what t! ‘The eagle shati be bligh! By the lightning of war. ‘When tixty is ended. And one takes its place, ‘When brothers offended Shall deal mutual disgrace. Lf white remain white, And black still be black, Once more they'll unite And bring happiness back. But whenever the Cross Stands aloft ‘mong the Stars, They shall gain by their loss, And thus end all their wars.”” are, ‘Tux Tavzs AND THE ATTEMPT To BREAK Jatt Mr. H. M. True desires us to correct our statement of the recent attempt to break jail, so far as it re- lates to him and bis brother, who are there await- ing trial upon charges growing out of the fraud upea the banking house of L. Johnson & Co, some months ago. The Trues say they were not in the room where the work was going on, but in another in the same range; and that they bad no band in the cutting out. We will also say for them, that we are informed at the jail that they were aware of the efforts making by the other prisoners, and intended to tell the keepers, though somehow they didn’t ag to do it. When the design was detected the Trues were put in irons, but were afterwards released from them. The principals in the work were the soldier Baker, — with killing acomrade in Georgetown, and A. Cohn, who attempted to break out of the guardhouseon two occasions withina few weeks. Daxygstowy, Oct. 29,2 P.M.—On Sunday last the picket of the Twenty-ninth Pennsylvania, which regiment was stationed on Muddy Branch, disco & scow floating down the Potomac Dearghe Virginia shore. Private James Magee, with" others, procured a skiff, crossed the river and the scow on its @ewnward pes- sage. It wae found nearly full of water, but contained thirty-one guns with fixed bayonets, twelve baversacks and three knapsacks. From certaia indications it is believed that this was the ‘incipal boat used in transporting General er’s command from Harrison's Island to the Virginia shore, and which went down loaded with the dead and wounded of the battle of Ball's Bluff. The guns were the same as thoe used by the California regiment ‘The inference is that the bodies of the unfortp- nate soldiers, becoming lightened Interns! decay, rose to the surface, and the it, thus relieved from ite weight, floated down witb the current. A close watch is now kept on the river to intercept any bodies which may be carried down by the current By the selection of Lieutenant Colonel Kings- bury of the Fifth Connecticut, to the Coloneicy of the Eleventh Connecticut Volunteers, Major Chapman has been promoted by the Govenor to be Lietitenant Colonel of the Fifth, and Captain Henry B.
