Roacn’s Sraincs, Now anv Taex —The ex- tensive fortification known as Fort Runyon in- closes the forks of the road at the locality formerly known as Columbia Spring, and is nearly a mile in cirevit. Those who p tens attended pic-nic parties there would be astonished to note the changes wrought in a few short months The grove, the spring, the emg pavilion, the “‘saléon”’ where thirsty men folks used to retire for “refreshments” and ¢: carefally wiping their lips previous to rejoining the ladies, ere ali “‘witbin the lines * Many of the trees have been cat down, but the grove above the ng bas been spared. The dancing pavilion is now a commissary store, the ten-pin alley accommodates borses with the brand of U.S. on them, and the whilom refreshment salocn is now an office and ‘Mess room for the subsistence department (ireater change than all—the orchestra where the inspiring strains of «Pop Goes the Weasel,” ‘‘Away down in Dixie,” and kindred airs used to be blown, fiddled, tooted, squaked, and thrummed, exciting the dancers to the most wonderful and gyinnastic feats—the orchestra is now used as a pulpit on Sabbath mornings by the worthy Chaplain of the Twenty-first New York Regiment, bis attentive congregation being grou on barrels of beef, =: and vinegar at his , and protected from he scorching rays of the sun fhe Interlaced boughs <see oaks not yet sacrificed to a mili- tary necessity. While the minister discourses of “‘peace on earth and good will to men,” the vision is bounded on every side by the prim slopes and angles of rampart, bastion, and stockade, and the eye involuntarily rests upon the black-mouthed dogs of war frowning defiantly over the battle- ments. An interesting description of what is to be seen bere in the way of defenses might be written, were it not that such description might afford and comfort to the enemy. Sutfice it to sey that our forces here are ready to receive Beauregard and his chivalry with all the honors, if they come down this way pic-nicing. ‘Tre Conreperats Prisoners —There are now sixty-five peeecss confined in the old brick Cap- itol building, corner of A north and First street east. under a guard of soldiers who patrol the side- walk around building. The lower windows bave been closed with boards nearly to the top, leaving only suiticlent for light and venti- lation, and several smaller buildings in the rear ate surrounded by a tight board fence twelve feet high, enclosing i & space of ground fora yard. In this and the outer buildings Potomac water has been introduced, and everything ren- dered as comfortable and pleesint as the circum- stances will permit. The prisoners are cheerful and quiet, though some are extremely bitter in their denunciations of the “ Yankee government.” Occasionally, ng soldiers who happen to be intoxicated, address them in rather uncompill- mentary terms, and with expressions which ren- ders their seclusion, for the time being, remark- ably agreeable to themselves. Sometimes soldiers #0 still further, and when the back of the sentry is towards them, toss a brick at the first head which appears at the window. Not long since a Fire Zouave who bad several times invited them out to “get licked,’ in passing by the dining- room, tossed a brick over into the room, with the jatention of “spiling’’ some of them while at din- ner; but they had luckily just left the table, and no damaze wasdone. Criminat Cocrt—On Saturday, after our re- Port closed in the case of Samuel A. Wood, cbarged with robbing letters of members of the Eighth New York Regiment, of which he was a member, Mr. G A Hall, special agent of the De- partment, and detective officer A. R Allen were examined. but the evidence was only corrobo- rative of Postmaster Ciephane’s. It was objected by defense that no conviction could ve had under the 2ist section of the act of Congress, because it was not in evidence that de- fendant at the time of the alleged commission of the offense was employed in the post office estab- lishment. And that by the record and evidence no offense was presented within the intent aod Meaning of the 22d section of the act, because the letter when opened was not a part of the mails, but had been previously delivered to defendant as the private agent of the regiment. ‘The points were argued by M_ Asbford and F. W. Jones, Eeq , for the defense, and Mr. Car- rington for the United States. The Court sustained the objections, and the Prisoner was acquitted Tae Boyd Case —In the case of the men charged with the murder of Cornelics Boyd, it is stated that the jury previous to their dismissal stood four for the conviction of ail tbe parties except Low, and eight for the ay an of all The jurors were dismissed until Monday, 12th inst., to which time the court adjourned, when this case will probably come up again. A Remevy Wantep.—Editor Star: Since so many reforms are taking place In the discipline of our forces, allow me, through your columns, to call attention to one of the most disigreeable and the same time dangerous practices of the volun- teer force now in and around this city. [allude to the unlawful, unnecessary, and I am sure (by their officers) unauthorized discharge of firearms in the Corporation limits, and in especial in the streets The foundation (unfinished) of the new Episcopal church on the corner of Fourteenth and N streets is now, and for some time has been, a regular target for ball practice, with guns and pis- tols, by soldiers of different regiments; and in no jess than two instances under my own eye have the contents of a heavily-loaded musket fallep in the front-door yard (in one case going into the house through a window) of a resident of that vicinity. There can be no reason for this, as there are plenty of places for ball practice near the ited, where the women and chil- the citizens generally, would not . In the writer’s own regiment no lowed to discharge firearms without ion from his captain, and then only at the regular be! ground, and before twelve o'clock atnoon. The cells at the Central Guard-house were last night filled with soldiers, most of whom were arrested the night previous for neglecting to obey the general orders to the letter. The guards also arrested several proprie- tors of lager beer saloons for selling to soldiers These will probably be turned over to the civil authorities to be dealt with according to the pro- visions of the law. Miss Exiza Key Baxter.—This young lady, who appears before the public in this her native city as a reader of Shakepcare and other poets, has received the warmest commendation of the press in the northern cities, where she made a most favorable impression. Her countenance is unusually mobile and expressive, and her manner quiet and nnostentatous.
