A like tone per- vades the comment of the French papers upon the subject. While we have no idea that any such recogni- tion will take place in the face of protests of this Government, it is evident tua sue Morr tana is destined greatly to complicate for us the other and far more important question. If England and France combine to use our secession Imbroglio to superinduce the repeal of fhe Morrill law, as they are evidently disposed to do, the chances are ten to one that it will not remain leng on the sta- tute book; insomuch as it has already become in- tensely unpopular at home Our belief is that ‘witbin thirty days from the Ist proximo, wien it goes into operation, it will be found that its in- tricacies render the collection of the revenue ac- cording to its provisions practically impossible, while its probibitory tendency will defeat all hope of raising sufficent revenue under it. It can require few additional embarrassments or checks to trade, added to that ef the present dinancial condition of the country, growing out of dis- union, to deter prudent men from venturing the usual heavy importations; and in the disabilities thrown upon importers by the Morrill law, those emberrsssments and checks will be very soon found to exist, we appreliend.* The only remedy Nes in speedy xction of Congress revising. and, indeed, wholly changing our revenue system, to meet the altered state of things resulting from the tecession of the Gulf States. Abouta menth since a Mr. Thos Burke came along and bought out Alcock, payiag him very liberally for his place. The plan ior rob- bing the bank must nave been formed previous to the | oan of the place; for, from =P ar~ ances, the work done by the burglars could not have been eccomplished much short ofa month. They dug a sort of tunnel, sufficiently large fora man to pass through, from the cellar occupied b: Burke, a distance of about seventy feet, an through almost solid masonry, until they reached the bank, coming up almost’ directly uzder the safe, which contained about $50,000 of available money. They used a jack, of power suiticient to raise upwards of forty tons, to break through the thick flagging upon which the safe rested. All they succeeded 1n carrying off was $200 in gold and $200 In western and southern money, belonging to Mr. A. L. Peck, broker, which was contained ina tin box standing upon the safe. The burglars had not sufiictent time, after reach- ing the vault, or they would doubtless bave made their way into the safe; but it would seem that morning came upon them before they were aware fi The porter, on reaching the store at half past 6 o’clock Monday morning, said be heard a noise in the back room. Informing them of what he bad heard. the door was burst open, when they bebeld, to their astonishment, the floor covered with piles of brick, dirt and burglar’s implements. Information was immediately sent to the third-precinct station house, and Capt. Jameson with some policemen soon made their appearance. By this time the burglars bed made geod their esca A man named Harmon Roberts, who it is said had some- thing to do with the place, was taken in custody and locked up in the third-precinct station hous on suspicion of being concerned in the burglary The tools used by the burglars were quite a cu- rlosity, consisting of large bars of tron, jimmys, spikes, jacks, &c , in all nearly acartload. They were all secured and taken to the third-precinct station hause. The Charleston correspondent of the New York Thies writes “ There are a good many curlousthings happen- ing here, which do not get into the papers, from motives, perhaps, of ‘military expediency ’’ One of them created a terrific atir among the fulr who fivcked to see their brothers and lovers, the other afternoon, at Sullivan’s Island. You are aware that an immense number of the tallest kind of shooting-irons are scattered thickly over the points that protectthe harbor. This particular afterncon the same soldiers who fired the ‘‘nccidental”’ shot at Fort Sumter, were experimenting with shells; these men are infantry, who have no practical knowledge of long ranges, so they puta large shell in one of the Columiads, and let ft slide. It went ricochetting over the bay, and, to their horror, they saw it fall on Sullivan's Island, ai- rectly back of the summer hotel, the Monitrie Flouse, now used as barracks. At that spot the ladies were enjoying themselves, where the Pal- metto youth gathered close around were whisper- ing all sorts of sweet things in foldly listening ears, when, with a loud whiz, the shell landed within fifty yards of the party.’ Fortunately ‘‘no- body was burt? “Yesterday afternoon another company, who are.stationed at the eld United States Light-ship, the Rattlesnake, which is now off Wappor Creek, on the Ashley River, was experimenting with a nder, the mate of Old Secession, they care- jotted her and pointed the yuu at Ben- nett’s saw mill, in thiscity, ‘just tosee how near they could come without hitting,” as one of them told me, when I weat over to inquire about it. The shot’ fell among a group of fifty negro women, ta the yard, and strange to say did not kill anybody, but the women ran screechiny through the city, and created a great excitement.” Tre Unitsy States Vesset: The Baltimore Sua of this morning says : “ We sleo see it etated that all the ships of the home squadron are out cf provisions.
